Two Gloves, One Message, Zero Cracks Yes, Friends, it IS that simple. How many years must you resist Uniting Gloves and Healthy Hands’ (UGHH’s) tireless efforts to educate you on the dangers lurking in the sub-50-degree temperatures just outside your autumn/winter/spring windowpane? If you haven’t heard our simple-yet-critical message before, read on! If you’re just here to renew your devotion to your fingers, read on! If you flit about outside on November afternoons with nothing but nails covering your cuticles, read on! Bread and Butter. Baldness and Kojak. Gloves and Your Hands from October 1 – March 31. Do you get it? It’s nature, not nurture. Wear them every time you’re out. Yes, every time.* *While not responsible for any suffering you may experience as a result of straying from the cause, UGHH recognizes the right to remove gloves for those periods when the temperature rises above 50 degrees. Consult your local weather listings for more specific guidance. If your local weather report does NOT include Glovealert™, visit (Many Against No Glovealert) and demand this vital service in your viewing – and glovewearing – area. Uniting Gloves and Healthy Hands 2006 Regional Newsletter UGHH : Have you shared the Glove message with a friend, maybe over a cocktail? Kate: I yell at my girlfriends for not wearing gloves. I will, as a friend, warm up their frozen nubs of skin and massage some lotion during my lecture. UGHH : Have you ever hidden your glove wearing from strangers or friends? Kate: No! Never! I especially show them off when I wear my cute red-striped ones with the balls that hang down. My Pair! “Bread and Butter. Baldness and Kojak. Gloves and Your Hands from October 1 – March 31.” Cocktails and Cuticles: an interview with Kate (UGHH recently had the chance to sit down with Kate Zabel, one of our more recent Glove enthusiasts and long-time Glove wearer.) UGHH : When did you first hear the important Glove message, that is, always wearing gloves outdoors from October 1 – March 31 prevents cuticle cracks? Kate: I would say back in At first I thought how SILLY, I’m in my late 20s, I have soft, supple hands, why would I need gloves? Then I repeated the statement again and decided I wanted to keep my twentysomething hands. UGHH : Have you seen some cracks in your lifetime? Kate: It’s horrible – I chew on my fingers trying to peal that piece of skin off, then it bleeds, then I have to use a band-aid. (our weekly nationally syndicated column – if you’re not getting it, you’re not getting it) UGHH : Do you remember an event when your diligence to our glove-wearing message made all the difference? Kate: I ran out of gas on the Bay Bridge coming home from Webster to the city – my boyfriend came to get me and we discovered that my gas tank door won’t open! Trying to pry it open + calling AAA NEEDED the assistance of a nice, warm pair of gloves. But not just ANY gloves – gloves where I could feel things, like my gas tank door! Ones I could wash afterwards since they smelled like gas! UGHH : You recently moved...I heard the glove box got special attention during transport/unpacking? Kate: Yes! I bought a plastic bin and placed my glove/mitten collection along side my scarves and hats! I never lost track of it. Not for a minute! UGHH : When you shopped for a new house...did you consider space to hold your gloves as a buying factor? Kate: I lost this battle with my man. The front closet doesn’t have shelves built in (cubby-hole style) to place pairs of gloves in, each pair separated for breathe-ability and easy-finding. I am currently looking to install this type of scenario in the front closet. Perhaps then he’ll see the importance of quick access to gloves…wish me luck! UGHH : What's your favorite pair/style of gloves? Kate: I used to like leather, until I realized that they don’t keep your hands warm, not even a stitch! Now, my fave pair of gloves are my new snowboard gloves – thin enough for 40 degree weather, big enough to stuff a liner in! UGHH : How many pair of gloves do you own? Kate: Hmm – 4! © 2006 Gregory Gerard
