Diga A traditional Malawian children’s game

What you’ll need A ball – Or maybe you can make your own like the children of Mteleleka village. Building blocks – at least 12. They use stones in Malawi.

How to play? Split into two teams (it’s boys against girls in Mteleleka ) One team has the ball - we’ll call them Team A Team B builds a small tower of stones/building blocks

The game starts with team A smashing the tower with team B standing away from it.

How it looks at the start of the game 3m The tower Team B Team A The thrower

After the tower’s knocked down, Team B rebuild it… while Team A try to hit them with the ball. If you’re hit, you’re out !

The game ends with either: Team A getting everybody out in team B before they rebuild the tower – Team A win. Or team B rebuilding the tower before their team are all out - Team B win.

Other rules If anyone from Team B catches the ball when Team A throw it at them, they can throw the ball as far as they can. Apart from this rule, no-one in Team B can touch the ball. The ball should be thrown to hit below the waist. Team A are not allowed to hit the tower after the first time.
