Photosynthesis Section: 2.3

The sun provides almost all the energy used by living things on Earth.

The process by which a cell captures the energy in sunlight and uses it to make food is called photosynthesis.

Chlorophyll and the other pigments capture light energy and use it to power the second stage of photosynthesis.

The cell needs two raw materials for the second stage: water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2). At the end of photosynthesis, one of the products of the reactions is oxygen (O2)the other product is sugar in the form of glucose (C6H12O6).

6 CO2 + 6 H2O Carbon dioxide + water sunlight chlorophyll C6H12O6 + 6 O2 Glucose + oxygen This is the equation for photosynthesis. You need to know both the words and the chemical formula.

Respiration Section: 2.4

During respiration, cells break down simple food molecules such as glucose and release the energy they contain.

The raw materials for respiration are glucose and oxygen.

Respiration takes place in the mitochondria.

The products of respiration are carbon dioxide and water.

C6H12O6 + 6 O2 Glucose + oxygen 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + ATP Carbon dioxide + water + energy mitochondria Inside This is the equation for respiration. You need to know both the words and the chemical formula.

What do you notice about Photosynthesis 6 CO2 + 6 H2O Carbon dioxide + water sunlight chlorophyll C6H12O6 + 6 O2 Glucose + oxygen What do you notice about these two equations?? C6H12O6 + 6 O2 Glucose + oxygen 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + ATP Carbon dioxide + water + energy mitochondria Inside Respiration

Photosynthesis Respiration 6 CO2 + 6 H2O C6H12O6 + 6 O2 Carbon dioxide + water sunlight chlorophyll C6H12O6 + 6 O2 Glucose + oxygen Photosynthesis C6H12O6 + 6 O2 Glucose + oxygen 6 CO2 + 6 H2O + ATP Carbon dioxide + water + energy mitochondria Inside Respiration

The equation for respiration is the opposite of the equation for photosynthesis.
