Quick Reminder… What is “theme”? Overarching moral or message of a work What lesson are we (humans) supposed to learn? What are the themes in the following stories? The Princess and the Frog The Hunger Games 21 Jump Street

How Do We Track Theme? Dialogue and Conversation Actions and Plot What do they characters say? Actions and Plot What do the characters do? Symbols What are ideas/objects that the author keeps returning to? Boo Radley, mockingbird, etc…

Themes Puzzle Match each of the quotes on the next page with the themes on your sheet Write down the words in red Remember the themes we are following… The End of Childhood/Loss of Innocence Social/Economic Inequality and Racism Doing the Right Thing/Courage We will discuss the following question: How have the themes run throughout the book so far?

Quote 1 "First of all," he said, "if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.“ (Page 30) – Atticus to Scout

Quote 2 That Calpurnia led a modest double life never dawned on me. The idea that she had a separate existence outside our household was a novel one, to say nothing of her having command of two languages. (Page 125) – Scout’s Perspective

Quote 3 "They're certainly entitled to think that, and they're entitled to full respect for their opinions," said Atticus, "but before I can live with other folks I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience.“ (Page 105) – Atticus to Scout

Quote 4 Lula stopped, but she said, "You ain't got no business bringin' white chillun here – they got their church, we got our'n. It is our church, ain't it, Miss Cal?“ (Page 119) – Lulu to Calpurnia

Quote 5 Atticus had promised me he would wear me out if he ever heard of me fighting any more; I was far too old and too big for such childish things, and the sooner I learned to hold in, the better off everybody would be. (Page 74) Scout’s Perspective

Quote 6 "Hush your mouth! Don't matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house's yo' comp'ny, and don't you let me catch you remarkin' on their ways like you was so high and mighty! Yo' folks might be better'n the Cunninghams but it don't count for nothin' the way you're disgracin' 'em – if you can't act fit to eat at the table you can just set here and eat in the kitchen!" (Pages 24-25) – Calpurnia to Scout

Quote 7 Scout: "Well how do you know we ain't Negroes?" Jem: "Uncle Jack Finch says we really don't know. He says as far as he can trace back the Finches we ain't, but for all he knows we mighta come straight out of Ethiopia durin' the Old Testament." Scout: "Well if we came out durin' the Old Testament it's too long ago to matter." Jem: "That's what I thought," said Jem, "but around here once you have a drop of Negro blood, that makes you all black.“ (Page 162)

Quote 8 “Things haven't caught up with that one's instinct yet. Let him get a little older and he won't get sick and cry. Maybe things'll strike him as being – not quite right, say, but he won't cry, not when he gets a few years on him.” (Page 201) – Dolphus Raymond

Quote 9 “She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man. Not an old Uncle, but a strong young Negro man. No code mattered to her before she broke it, but it came crashing down on her afterwards.” (Page 204) – Atticus to Jury

Quote 10 Dill's eyes flickered at Jem, and Jem looked at the floor. Then he rose and broke the remaining code of our childhood. He went out of the room and down the hall. (Page 141) Scout’s Perspective

Quote 11 "Scout," said Atticus, "nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don't mean anything – like snot-nose. It's hard to explain – ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody's favoring Negroes over and above themselves. It's slipped into usage with some people like ourselves, when they want a common, ugly term to label somebody.“ (Page 108) – Atticus to Scout

Quote 12 “Scout… it's not fair for you and Jem, I know that, but sometimes we have to make the best of things, and the way we conduct ourselves when the chips are down – well, all I can say is, when you and Jem are grown, maybe you'll look back on this with some compassion and some feeling that I didn't let you down." (Page 104) Atticus to Scout

Quote 13 "You know the truth, and the truth is this: some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral, some Negro men are not to be trusted around women – black or white. But this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men. There is not a person in this courtroom who has never told a lie, who has never done an immoral thing…” (Page 204) – Atticus to Jury
