BALLOON WASTE AND THE ONGOING LITTER ISSUE ASHLEY SHAK COASTWATCH 20 TH MARCH 2015

WHAT IS THE ISSUE? Water bottles, plastic bags, drink cans…..balloons? What we see as fun, animals see as food!

Only 5 to 10% of balloons make it to bursting height Even non-profits and other foundations are partaking in deadly balloon releases– without realising their consequences Biodegradable balloons aren’t the final solution, as they become sticky and clog throats of animals, and 6 to 12 months to decompose

“The following species found in Irish waters, five of which are protected, have been reported with latex balloons in their digestive systems: Sperm Whale, Common Dolphin, Risso’s Dolphin, Loggerhead Turtle, Leatherback Turtle, Blue Shark, and Northern Fulmar.” And this is just in Ireland!

WHAT CAN WE DO? Next steps… TCD Eco-tour? Continue online balloon survey to get a bigger baseline knowledge

ALTERNATIVES TO KEEP IN MIND Secured balloon releases: Secure balloons to ground or with fishing line and let them go as planned. Reel them back in when display is finished, and dispose or hand out when finished. Indoor balloon releases: The same effect, but with no fly-away litter! Flags/banners/streamers/ribbons: Weather-resistant and reusable alternatives save time and money.
