2. How is plastic affecting our ocean?
They’re working with WWF to protect and restore our amazing oceans.
Because oceans have no borders, plastic pollution isn’t just a problem that affects far away islands in the Pacific, it’s spoiling our beaches too; polluting our drinking water and killing wildlife. They’re also home to incredible animals like dolphins, whales and turtles. But our oceans are under greater pressure than ever before from threats like pollution. No one person or business can solve this, it’s up to all of us, together.

Big pieces of plastic are harmful to many creatures: beautiful turtles, which are getting stuck in plastic bags and suffocating; seabirds, choking on plastic getting caught up on beaches; tiny pieces are clogging the stomachs with plastic mistaking it for food. It can affect all creatures of the sea anything from the blue whale to the angle fish.
It is also affecting us as it is getting so bad as we eat fish we are also starting to eat plastic!

3. Every minute, the equivalent of a rubbish truck load of plastic goes in to our oceans, it never decomposes and will remain there forever. If nothing changes, by 2050 all the plastic in the ocean could weigh more than all the fish. Our oceans health affect us all so we need to come together to take action and protect our oceans.

5. Plastic pollution key numbers
Right now 12.7 million tonnes of plastic is in the ocean!
Each year 8 million tonnes of plastic gets dumped in the ocean!
Each hour tonnes of plastic enters the ocean! This may not seem a lot but it is ; scientists want to decrease it to 0. this number is not shown on the pie chart as it is a small number but not small enough.
As a school we could reduce the amount of plastic we use and recycle it as well as paper so we could help deforestation. We believe as a school we could really help in the SKY OCEAN RESCUE PROJECT

8. What can we do to Help? Use a reusable water bottle
Water bottles make up around half of all plastic bottles in the UK.
There are7.7 billion plastic water bottles used in the UK each year.
If you use a reusable water when you want a drink you can, drink what you want, when you want wherever you want. This will make a huge difference to the plastic pollution epidemic.
Use a reusable coffee cup
Over the past 10 years the UK have become a nation of coffee/hot chocolate/warm drink lovers. 2.2 billion disposable cups are thrown away each year.
Only 1 in 400 cups are recycled.
Shopping Bags
Plastic bags take over 1000 years to decompose.
Use a sustainable bag!!!

9. How can the pupils of st mary’s school help?
Recycle plastic waste in school and at home.
2. Pass on Plastic -Reduce single use plastic. Make sure you and your families invest in a re-usable metal bottle to reduce the use of single use plastic in every day life.
3. Encourage staff/visitors to not use single use plastic cups for hot and cold drinks and invest in a re-usable hot/cold drink cup.
