Recycling WHAT IT IS? AND WHAT IT IS NOT? Grade 5 Science Topic: Environment and Us

Recycling is: Conversion of OLD materials/items to NEW materials/items or products That means, you break down old and damaged materials to make them into raw materials. When you have the raw materials, then you can make them into NEW products again Recycling is a reversible change Recycling is a BIG PROCESS Step 1: BREAKING DOWN of MATERIALS Step 2: Processing of materials ---> To prepare raw materials

Why do we recycle? We will conserve natural resources (both renewable and non-renewable). How? We won’t need to consume or bring in NEW / FRESH raw materials (minerals, coal ores, crude oil, trees!!) That means recycling leads to: - Less Quarrying for new minerals - Less cutting down of trees (less deforestation) - Less waste production - Less negative activities that harm our environment

How is paper made or processed? THINK ABOUT THIS QUESTION Bonus question

WHEN PAPER AND PAPER PRODUCTS (CARDBOARD, PAPER BOXES, SHOE BOXES, TISSUE PAPERS, NEWSPAPERS ETC.), ARE RECYCLED, THEY GO THROUGH THE SAME PROCESS AS PAPER MANUFACTURING THE PAPER PRODUCTS ARE BROKEN DOWN, SHREDDED AND MADE INTO PULP  HEAT + CHEMICALS = THE PULP BECOMES PAPER.

How paper is made from trees?

When we recycle old paper and paper products, we can make new ______________________________ ______________________________ Bonus question

Can you recycle at home? PARTIALLY YES By contributing to the process of recycling! By collecting and putting old and damaged plastic items/products in PLASTIC recycle BINS Similarly, metal items into METAL recycle BINS Paper/paper products into PAPER recycle BINS NO Because RECYCLING is done at the recycling facilities/plants where huge instruments are there to - break down materials - Process the materials - And make new items or products again

Observe these BINS carefully! DO WE HAVE SUCH ‘LABELLED’ BINS IN LAHORE OR PAKISTAN? WHY OR WHY NOT? DISCUSS WITH YOUR PAIRS! Did you know there are three UNIVERSAL COLOUR CODES FOR RECYCLE BINS? BLUE, YELLOW AND RED! Can you find the recycle logo?

Recyclable products: - Glass - Metals(Cans/Electronics) - Plastics - Rubber All types of glasses are recyclable. Break down old damaged glass products and make them into NEW glass items/products For example: Window glass can be recycled at the plants (factories) to make NEW glass. With this NEW glass, one can make products such as car window screens, drinking glasses, glass jars, glass bottles, magnifying glass, eye- glasses etc. URL Reference: ideas.com/recycling

Glass recycling…

Coca Cola-An example of Glass, Metal and Plastic Recycling! URL Reference: Lets explain! How do we recycle COKE glass bottles? What would we able to make NEW items from the ‘glass’? If I say, I had made a pencil holder from an old glass bottle, will it be recycle or reuse?

Let’s quiz each other! How can we practice recycling? - Metals Quiz time! Q1. What are the various metals? Can you name them? Q2. How are metals recycled? Can you explain the process? Q3. From OLD metal items, what new products can they be made into? (name recycled products ? (Hint: Look at the picture!) 3 points per group

Recycling process (for metal cans)

Do the 5 th GRADERS understand the process of recycling? REVISION CHECK LIST Will you able to give your examples of recycling on the chart in Science notebook? Are we clear about the differences between reduce, reuse and recycle?
