AMERICAN MUSIC Yuching Chen

American Music Devorak’s perspective on an American music: ~ “I suggested that inspiration for truly national music might be derived for the Negro melodies or Indian chants.”~

George Gershwin (1898 –1937) 1. George Gershwin 2. Rhapsody in Blue 3. Response 4. Gershwin’s contribution in the music

Nodame Cantabile 交響情人夢

George Gershwin (1898 –1937)   Compositions: “Rhapsody in Blue” (1924) “An American in Paris” (1928) opera “Porgy and Bess” (1935).

RHAPSODY IN BLUE (1924)  Solo piano and jazz band, which combines elements of classical music with jazz- influenced effects.  Premiere: February 12, 1924 by Whiteman and his band with Gershwin playing the piano.

Response  Lawrence Gilman, commended on the Rhapsody in the “New York Tribune” on February 13, 1924, said: “How trite, feeble and conventional the tunes are; how sentimental and vapid the harmonic treatment, under its disguise of fussy and futile counterpoint!... Weep over the lifelessness of the melody and harmony, so derivative, so stale, so inexpressive!”

THANK YOU~
