TRIOS Shade Measurement Requirements, Cleaning, Scanning tips etc. TRIOS Software 1.3.0.0 color measurements Source: LHE/SEL Editor: BBE

TRIOS Shade Measurement Shade measurements with TRIOS® Good practices for getting accurate shade measurements using TRIOS

Requirements for Shade measurements TRIOS Shade Measurement Requirements for Shade measurements Shade compatible scanner. * TRIOS Color Cart, Color Pod, Color CIK TRIOS software (1.3.2.0 or later) Color calibration kit. * NOTE* See mail ‘TRIOS Color Calibration Kit now available for shipping’ of 2014-07-04 for details

Color Calibration Kit Don’t touch by hand TRIOS Shade Measurement Color Calibration Kit Color calibration kit: Left: Color calibration target Middle: Tip-adapter Right: Combined Don’t touch by hand Clean with filtered air at low pressure Store in the protective sleeve and out of direct sunlight

Unclean Mirror of Tip Unclean mirror of tip TRIOS Shade Measurement Unclean Mirror of Tip Unclean mirror of tip Some autoclaves leave stains on the mirror. Usually doesn’t affect the scanning, but the strict tolerances of the color calibration may cause the color calibration to fail. Fix: Clean the mirror with a soft cloth and run the color calibration again. If this is not successful, try with a new tip, which has not been autoclaved. Mirror with deposits Clean mirror Note: It is easy to inspect how clean the mirror is by attaching it to the scanner and then starting the scanner. If the mirror is clean, you will see no haze or dirt on the mirror.

Unclean Front Glass Front glass of inner black tube of scanner TRIOS Shade Measurement Unclean Front Glass Front glass of inner black tube of scanner Over time, a thin film of residue will deposit on the front glass of the inner back tube of the scanner. This film is not visible to the naked eye, so it is not possible to detect it. Fix: Wipe the front glass with a dry optical cloth.

Unclean Calibration Target TRIOS Shade Measurement Unclean Calibration Target Areas that must be free from dust, dirt etc. The color calibration target may be unclean. Inspect both sides for dust, dirt etc. You should never under any circumstance touch the optical components of the color calibration target. Clean only with filtered air at low pressure

TRIOS Shade Measurement External Lights? External light may affect the shade measurement! It is important to turn off all intense lights prior to scanning. Turn off the dental lamp, as the intensity is very high. Normal room lighting is not a problem for the TRIOS®.

TRIOS Shade Measurement First Scan Strategy Scan preparation first, and then lock the margin line Step 4: Select the shade icon to the right on the TRIOS® monitor. A blue overlay will appear where the scan quality is not sufficient for performing shade measurements. Scan the tooth you want to use for shade measurement until blue overlay clears out. (please refer to section “Adding shades to the scan”) Step 1: Remove the retraction cord and scan the preparation immediately Step 2: Lock the margin, using the lock tool. (paint the area around the margin) Step 5: Place shade measurement circle You find the lock tool under the tool bar button ‘Tools’ Step3: Scan the rest of the arch

Second Scan Strategy Scan margin as the last thing you scan TRIOS Shade Measurement Second Scan Strategy Scan margin as the last thing you scan Step 4: Trim margin away Step 1: Scan arch with cord in place Step 2: Select the shade icon to the right on the TRIOS® monitor. A blue overlay will appear where the scan quality is not sufficient for performing shade measurements. Scan the tooth you want to use for shade measurement until blue overlay clears out. (please refer to section “Adding shades to the scan”) Step 5: Remove cord and scan margin immediately Step 3: Place shade measurement circle

Third Scan Strategy Use a pre-preparation scan TRIOS Shade Measurement Step 1: Add pre-preparation scan on order form Step 4: Place shade measurement circle on the pre-preparation scan Step 2: Go to the pre-preparation scan page and scan the arch Step 5: Go to preparation scan page and scan the preparation only   Step 3: Select the shade icon to the right on the TRIOS® monitor. A blue overlay will appear where the scan quality is not sufficient for performing shade measurements. Scan the tooth you want to use for shade measurement until blue overlay clears out. (please refer to section “Adding shades to the scan”)

TRIOS Shade Measurement Adding Shades to a Scan 3 easy steps to obtain a scan quality that is sufficient for adding shade measurements: Select the tooth to measure shade If the center of this tooth has blue overlay you will need to scan some more in this region until the blue color clears up: This is done by adding more sub scans and from different angles. A fast way to do this is to move the scanner 90 degrees slowly from occlusal to buccal or vice versa. See image below Note that you do not need to remove the blue overlay completely, just enough to place shade measurement circle(s) on the center of the one tooth selected for shade measurement Example of blue overlay (Shade scan quality)

Defining the Shade measured by TRIOS TRIOS Shade Measurement Defining the Shade measured by TRIOS The shade value guides have a fixed number of shades. In some cases there will not be a shade that matches the captured color perfectly. The TRIOS® always gives you the best matching shade. The shade reported by TRIOS® always corresponds to the circled area in the figure

Warning indication if rule is violated TRIOS Shade Measurement Placing the shade measurement circles Where to place the shade measurement circle? Warning indication if rule is violated   In areas where the shade inside the measurement circle is uniform In areas with sufficient scan quality. When you have turned on the scan shade-quality overlay, the areas with sufficient quality are the areas with no blue overlay In areas with regular tooth color. Areas with irregular tooth colors are gingiva, heavily discolored stumps etc. Note: This also implies that you should not place the measurement circle at Interproximal areas. These are usually colored blue, indicating insufficient scan quality for shade measurement) Translucent areas, typically close to incisal edge

TRIOS Shade Measurement Adding HD Photos The shade of the tooth is provided by the shade measurement functionality of the TRIOS®. In most cases, a photo that show aesthetic details in the teeth (e.g. internal cracks, mineralizations, etc.) will accompany the shade information. The source of this photo may be an external SLR camera and the photo is transferred to the lab by means of e.g. email. In TRIOS® you may take one or more HD photos of the teeth. These HD photos are directly embedded in the order and consequently no separate emailing is required. Each HD photo is put on the actual 3D model, so that you may inspect the HD photo on the real tooth geometry. Example of HD photo in combination with shade measurement circles

When to Color Calibrate? 3Shape When to Color Calibrate? Color calibrate the scanner before each scan for optimal color quality if you intend to use Shade Measurement. The mirror in the tip is almost never 100% clean, small variances could have an impact on the Shade Measurement. Color calibration has a weekly reminder. Shade Measurement will be disabled if the scanner has not been color calibrated for 30 days.
