King Tut’s Burial Mask 6 th Grade Social Studies Project

Materials Cast Material Cut into 3 inch strips Facial Mold Mixing bowl Acrylic or tempera (gold) Pencil and paint brushes Thin-tipped non-toxic black markers Corrugated cardboard toilet paper roll Masking or duct tape Plastic Wrap

Step 1: Make the Mask 1. Wear old clothes. 2. Cut cast material into three inch strips 3. Make a cardboard cutout of King Tut’s head dress. 4. (Using duct tape or masking tape) tape King Tut’s headdress to facial mold. 5. (Using plastic wrap only if facial mold is paper) Wrap facial mold with plastic wrap.

Step 1: Make the Mask 5. Dip cast material into water and wipe of excess water. 6.Apply the strips over the facial mold and headdress while pressing down firmly until a solid mask has been formed. 7.Allow the cast material to dry over night and then carefully remove facial mold from casting material.

Step 2: Make the Beard 1. ( Using a toilet paper roll) Cut three triangular piece from the toilet paper roll. 2. Cut out another piece of the toilet paper roll so that it will fit snuggle under the chin. 3. Tape the toilet paper roll closed 4. Using Hot Glue attach toilet paper roll to mask. 5. Dip casting material into water and wipe of excess water.

Step 2: Make the Headdress 5. Dip casting material into water and wipe of excess water. 6. Carefully apply the strips over the surface of the beard. (Be careful the beard does not fall off) 7. Allow the casting material to dry overnight.

Step 3: Paint the Mask 1. Paint the entire mask and allow the paint to dry. 2. Mark out your painting lines with the black marker. 3. Fill in the colors as appropriate.
