The following questions will be multiple choice: What was unusual about how the author of “Baseball” and his friends played the game? What sort of equipment did the author and his friends use? Who had the final word on how the game was played? (3 names) What object served as first base? If he never got to bat, why would the author even play the game? What had Uncle Adolfo given the author?

The following questions will be multiple choice: How did Father Zavala react to the games the children played? Where did the children begin each game? What was Uncle Adolfo’s reaction to how the children played baseball? What determined when the game ended? What is the main idea of “Baseball”? Pick from one of these sentences: The children loved to play baseball. Father Zavala loved watching the children play. Uncle Adolfo thought they wasted the ball he gave the children. The author never got to bat.

The following questions will be multiple choice: What does the word evaded mean? What does the word devices mean in the following sentence? After giving the instructions, the teacher left the students to their own devices. What is an adjective? What does it modify/describe? In this sentence, which word is an adjective? The funny clown quietly surprised the child.

The following questions will be short essays: Describe some of the rules the author and his friends used for their version of baseball. Explain how they made the game especially fun to play. Describe Father Zavala’s reactions to the children playing baseball and explain why you think the author included them. Think about the main idea! Tell whether you think the author gives enough information to explain why the baseball games he and his friends played were fun. Support your answer with details from the story.
