“Was Jefferson Justified in Buying Louisiana?” (paragraph 1) Thomas Jefferson was elected the 3 rd President of the United States by the House of Representatives. He was a Democratic-Republican who believed in a strict interpretation of the Constitution, which means that the national government should only have powers expressly listed in the Constitution. Jefferson, however, found a loophole when Napoleon offered to sell Louisiana to the United States. It was sold to us through a treaty. There are three reasons why Jefferson made this agreement: one, the size of the territory we were to get ; two, the cost of the territory; and three, the benefits it created for the United States. Size (paragraph 2)Cost (paragraph 3)Benefits (paragraph 4) Doc. 1 = doubled the size of the U.S. Doc. 1 = Jefferson offered $10 million but paid $15 Doc. 1 = gain control of the Mississippi R. Doc. 1 = included states as AK, OK, MO, KS, NE, IA Doc. 4= “You have bought LA for a song (it is cheap; 3 cents and acre) Doc. 3 = increase fur trade Doc. 3 = Lucrative trade from this source (LA territory) Paragraph 5: Conclusion
