A gargoyle is a carved stone creature usually made of granite, with a spout designed to convey water away from the side of a building. They were attached to churches and castle walls in medieval times to protect buildings and keep away evil.

The Animal Wall is a sculptured wall depicting different animals and is right here on your doorstep in Cardiff! It was built in 1890 by William Frame. Originally, there were eight animals, but during a road- widening project in the early 1900's, several more were added, such as a lynx, a vulture, a beaver, a seal, a racoon, an ant-eater, monkeys and a pelican.

Maggie Richards is a local Welsh Artist who painted the animals from Cardiff Castle’s animal wall using pen, wash and watercolour paint

Another Welsh artist, Peter Phillips, travels around the UK drawing gargoyles that he finds on castles and churches. He uses a felt pen and wash technique that you will learn today.

Look carefully at the animal gargoyle you have created today. Well done, You have created a unique piece of Art! On the back of your drawing, write down one thing you feel you have done well Then, write down one area you think you could have improved on For example:  I like the scary expression on my gargoyles face and the way I have used shading to add tone.  I think I can improve on my drawing skills by practising how to draw animals from real life and photographs.

If you are lucky enough to own a pet try drawing them when they are sleeping. Try to show the TONE and TEXTURE of their fur either in colour or a shaded drawing. If you do not have a pet, copy an image from the internet, book or magazine. Also, take photographs of your pets and bring them to class if you can
