1. Kurt Jackson continued- I have been looking at this artist, fascinated by his environmental links in his art. Admiring the movement and depth of swell in his seascapes. I have done a study in charcoal and chalk of stormy seas. I then explored further using a similar technique but with a linseed oil and watercolour wash, then adding oils and salt into the mix. I love the reactions between the linseed and the water, then the running dripping water caught by the salt. I then worked in the oils with my hands – feeling every grain of salt and grinding it into the motion of the stormy sea. As the paint has dried the texture is really interesting, the combination of salty oil building the spray and motion of the foam and shape of the wave. I have originally worked on A2 oil paper; but then proceeded to an A1 canvas (on slide 7)for my final piece.

7. Final Piece I have repeated the process of my studies, on a bigger scale; doing much of it without the aid of a brush – just my hands. I connected with every turn in the waves understanding its motion and mood. I have tried echo the mood in the sky within the sea. I have only used three colours much like Vermeer; Ultra marine, yellow ochre and white. I have combined refined linseed as a base wash and then layered water colour wash over the top. I have used a heavy sprinkle of salt and ground it into the canvas with the oils. I have thoroughly enjoyed the freedom of my thoughts and feelings of belonging to the sea, I felt very much like I had gone home.
