Battle is brewing over proposed move of homeless shelter's office BILL LAITNER FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER January 12,

“Heated Debate on Homeless Shelter Nothing on the agenda says "Heated debate on homeless shelter" for tonight's Ferndale City Council meeting. But that's what city officials expect to hear during the public comment session, when leaders of the South Oakland Shelter plan to promote their hope to move from Royal Oak to Ferndale -- and when opponents, according to an anonymous flyer, also plan to be there.

Opponents At least one opponent walked Ferndale streets last week, leaving anonymous flyers for homeowners -- including former Ferndale Mayor Chuck Goedert, who said the flyer warns of high crime, "liquor bottles, garbage, human feces" and lower property values if the move takes place. Yet, the move planned for this summer to the empty First Baptist Church building west of downtown Ferndale is to be just of the shelter's offices, said Kevin Roach, the shelter's executive director. It would double its cramped office and training space, officials said. "We'll have an expanded education center, and we hope to have showers, but no one will sleep there," Roach said Friday.

Clients Nor do homeless clients sleep at the shelter's current offices in downtown Royal Oak. Instead, the charity's clients -- limited to about 30 at a time -- rotate among 67 churches and synagogues in Oakland County, spending one week at each site, said Larry Murphy, the shelter's board president. Royal Oak officials said the allegations in the shelter opponents' flyer were untrue. Royal Oak Police Chief Ted Quisenberry said that the shelter's offices had not been a crime site. City Commissioner and former city attorney Chuck Semchena added: "I haven't heard of any complaints over there for 10 or 12 years."
