4 What is a Bureaucracy? Bureaucracy
A government characterized by specialization of functions, adherence to fixed rules, and a hierarchy of authority

5 Federal Bureaucracy 3 million bureaucrats, or civil servants
Three main purposes: 1) turn new laws into actions. 2) perform the day-to- day operations of the government. 3) Regulate various activities

6 Organization of the Executive Branch
Executive Office of the President (EOP) Commonly referred to as the president’s Administration The White House Office Cabinet members, Chief of Staff, Press Secretary, other top advisors

7 National Security Council
Management and Budget Prepares The federal budget National Security Council Advises the President on military and foreign policy Includes: The Vice President, Secretaries of state and defense, and Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff (Top military officials of each branch) Also oversees the CIA

8 More Offices Office of Administration Council of Economic Advisers
Helps with office work for the president Gives out information under the freedom of information act. Council of Economic Advisers Helps President with role of Economic Leader The Cabinet Top Advisers Vice President Level of responsibility is up to the President First Lady Usually has her own projects Has her own office in the White House

9 Independent Agencies Executive Agencies Deal with specialized areas within government. Example: NASA

10 Government Corporations
Like private businesses, but the government owns and operates them. President chooses a board of directors. Example Postal Service

11 Regulatory Boards and Commissions
Supposed to help protect the Public. Appointed by the president, but do not report to him. Can only be impeached by Congress Example: Federal Communications Commission
