Essential Question How was President Wilson’s plan for peace different from other leaders?

What happened when the war ended? Once the war ended on November 11, 1918 – the Allies needed to set the terms for peace President Wilson wanted a “lasting peace” Other leaders wanted to seek revenge against Germany

Who were the Big Four? Woodrow Wilson, United States David Lloyd George, Great Britain Georges Clemenceau, France Vittorio Orlando, Italy Leaders of 27 allied nations met in Paris in 1919 to create a peace agreement following the war The Paris Peace Conference was under the leadership of the Big Four

Who was invited to the peace conference? Any nation who fought on the Allied side were welcome to help set the terms of the peace treaty However, since Russia dropped out of the war, it was given no say in the creation of the peace treaty The Allies forbid any defeated nation, like Germany from participating in the peace process

Was peace made quickly? Without any defeated nations present, it should have been easy to create a treaty, however… Allied nations had different views on how losing nations should be treated A compromise needed to be reached

What was Wilson’s plan for peace? President Wilson wanted a “lasting peace” He wanted losing nations to be treated fairly He wanted to avoid punishing losing nations too harshly He did not want losing nations to have to pay heavy reparations His plan for peace became known as the Fourteen Points

What were the Fourteen Points? Fourteen different ideas made up Wilson’s plan, some of the major ideas are: An end to secret alliances Limit of military buildups Right to self-rule to all people Freedom of the seas An international organization to settle disputes peacefully In the end, only one of his points would become part of the peace treaty
