Moving on… Between B.C Alexander had been fighting a guerrilla war with the eastern Persians. This was taking a toll on his men. The toughest strong hold was the Sogdian Rock. He had also lost Parmenio, Philotas and Cleitus

Enter Roxane (Roxana) At the fall of Sogdia, Alexander meets the Sogdian Princess Roxane. She is so beautiful that he allegedly falls immediately in love with her. They are married (in full Persian grandeur) shortly after. How will his army/ companions view the marriage?

Reasons for marrying Love To produce and heir Subdue the Eastern Tribes. ProsCons Use this layout. In your books, write down the pros and cons for each motive for his marriage.

The Pages Conspiracy Shortly after there is another plot against Alexander’s life. This was a plot by his pages (attendants) and Callisthenes- his official scribe/ historian. This was a plot by his pages (attendants) and Callisthenes- his official scribe/ historian. Callisthenes was the grand nephew of Aristotle (who Alexander had recently fallen out with)!

The story- Write your own step by step version Sons of Macedonian Nobles could become pages- they were charged with helping Alexander and watching over him at night. Make sure no one stabs me in the night OK

One day, Alexander was out hunting… When a wild boar charged at him… Oh Bugger!

Fearing for Alexander, one of the pages- Hermolaus killed the boar Not to worry, I ‘banged ‘im out’ for you

Alexander was furious that Hemolaus killed the boar- He wanted to. How can I be “Great” if I get saved by a 15 year old?!?! Sorry Alexander had Hemolaus whipped

Hemolaus was furious! He swore revenge. I’m Bare vexed at Alex He enlisted the help of 3 other pages We’ll Help

They planned to murder Alexander when one of them was guarding him at night. Z Z Z Z Z Mwah ha ha!

Annoyingly, that night Alexander stayed up drinking until dawn… Another Macedonian The plot was uncovered and the boys were arrested

The boys were tortured and said Callisthenes convinced them to kill Alexander. It was Callisthenes who told us to do it, honest! Grass!

Alexander believed them as he already thought badly of Callisthenes Bloody Callisthenes, moaning about my Persian ways, and he’s the grand nephew of that old fart Aristotle! Typical that he gets boys to do a mans work! Bloody Historians!

Everyone was either executed of died in jail HA! That’ll teach those pesky kids!

Assessing the conspiracy What does the conspiracy tell us about Alexander’s character/ state of mind? What does it tell us about relations in the Macedonian court?

Extended Learning ‘Obeisance’ This was the practice of bowing and kissing the king. Read Arrian (after the Cleitus bit) How does this help explain the Pages Conspiracy?
