Genre Theory Films can be organized according in to three principal groups: setting, mood, and format. A genre can be defined as a group of movies that share similar elements such as scripts, types of actors, scenes, film techniques, camera shoots, sound, music, illumination, edition, etc.

Comedy is a genre of film in which the main emphasis is on humor, also the majority of comedy films have happy or funny endings (with the exceptions of black comedy – comedy with a horror or serious undertone). It is One of the oldest genres in film, some of the very first silent movies were comedies. Comedy, like other film genres, comedy puts much more focus on individual stars, with many former stand-up comic transitioning to the film industry due to their popularity. most comedy films are lighthearted stories with no intent other than to amuse the audience. Just like thriller comedy has many sub genres, and different genre combinations e.g. Rom- com Comedy seeks to engage profound emotions and sympathies, comedy strives to entertain mainly through criticism and ridicule of man's customs and institutions. Comedy is not solely entertainment, it also offers a need to escape from the stress and restrictions of our everyday routines. Through comedy we can laugh at others struggling through that same world. We recognize that we are not alone and other people suffer from similar situations and thus we learn to laugh at ourselves and our situations. Comedy is an effective way to question our society, its institutions, and beliefs. By putting a comic spin on serious issues from war to illnesses, comedy reveals the madness of our world Comedy

Thriller Thriller is a broad genre of literature, film and television that includes numerous and often overlapping sub-genres. Thrillers are characterized by fast pacing, frequent action, and resourceful heroes who must thwart the plans of more powerful and better equipped villains Thrillers include techniques like cliff-hangers, red herrings and suspense as a device to keep the audience focused. Just like comedy thrillers often star famous celebrities as main roles. Thrillers are normally a story that starts with a serious problem. There is normally a hero who tries to solve the problem only to find that it gets worse. The plot rises to a dramatic confrontation with the villain, with the hero always coming out better. Music and sound is used as a suspense technique often building up to climactic events e.g. car chases, fights, death

Social Realism Social Realism, (also known as Socio-Realism) is an artistic movement, expressed in most media, it depicts social and racial injustice, economic hardship; often depicting working class activities as heroic. Social Realism is a very broad term for painting; that comments on contemporary social, political, or economic conditions in a realistic manner. Often the term carries with it, the suggestion of protest or propaganda in the interest of social events. Social realism is considered Britain's main form of cinema. One of the first British social realism films was the 1902 film from U.K. director James Williamson, A Reservist Before the War, and After the War which memorialized the Boer War serviceman coming back home to unemployment and poverty Directors such as Shawn meadows and ken loach, are famous for their films ( this is England, looking for Eric) but the majority of socio realist directors aren't famous or out for money most social realism films are made on a small budget and with lesser known actors which gives the film a more natural effect.

We have decided to choose Social realism This is because as the younger generation we can relate to modern society easier because we can see the problems in today's society. We feel due to our age, we can agree on what to include because we all have knowledge and understanding on our chosen genre, where as if we where to choose comedy for example, we may only have idea’s from other films and may not agree. A main influence in our choice for social realism is Ken Loach and Shane Meadows and Noel Clarke. Both use modern day events to produce a film on a tight budget. Our main influence would be Noel Clarke who wrote Kidult and adulthood.
