Safety Symbols Safety symbols are to alert you to possible laboratory dangers. Be sure that you understand each symbol before you begin a lab activity.

Disposal Hazard Special disposal considerations required Examples Chemicals, broken glass, living organisms such as bacterial cultures, protists, etc…

Biological/Biohazard Hazard Organisms or organic materials that can harm humans Examples Bacteria, fungus, blood, raw organs, plant material

Extreme Temperature Hazard Objects that can burn skin by being too cold or too hot Examples Bolling liquids Hot plates Liquid nitrogen Dry ice All burners

Sharp Object Hazard Use of tools or glassware that can easily puncture or slice skin Examples Razor blades Scalpel Nails Push pins

Fume Hazard Potential danger to olfactory tract from fumes Examples Ammonia Heating sulfur Moth balls Nail polish remover Acetone

Electrical Hazard Possible anger from electrical shock or burn Examples Improper grounding Liquid spills Short circuits

Irritant Hazard Substances that can irritate the skin or mucus membranes Examples Pollen Mothballs Steel wool Potassium permanganate

Corrosive Hazard Substances (acids and bases) that can react with and destroy tissue and other materials Examples Acids – Vinegar – Hydrochloric acid – Hydrogen peroxide Bases – Bleach – Soap – Sodium hydroxide (lye – add it to cold water only, NEVER water to sodium hydroxide (can be EXPLOSIVE)– produces heat - used in making soap

Toxic/Poison Hazard Poisonous substance that can be acquired through skin absorption, inhalation, or ingestion Examples Mercury Many metal compounds Iodine Poinsettia leaves

Flammable Hazard Flammable and combustible materials that may ignite if exposed to an open flame or spark Examples Alcohol Powders Kerosene Potassium permanganate – Used as an antiseptic – Water tx industry (removes iron and hydrogen sulfide from well water)

Eye safety This symbol appears when a danger to eyes exist Clothing protection This symbol appears when substances could stain or burn clothing

Safety in the Lab 1.Always obtain your teachers permission to begin a lab. 2.Study the procedure. If you have questions, ask your teacher. Be sure you understand all safety symbols shown. 3.Use the safety equipment provided for you. Goggles and a lab apron should be worn when any lab calls for using chemicals. 4. When you are heating a test tube, always slant it so the mouth points away form you and others. 5. Never eat or drink in the lab. Never inhale chemicals. (WAFTING) Do not taste any substance or draw any material into your mouth. 6. If you spill any chemical, immediately wash it off with water. Report the spill immediately to your teacher.

Safety in the Lab 7. Know the location and proper use of the fire extinguisher, safety shower, fire blanket, first aid kit, and fire alarm. 8. Keep all materials away from open flames. Tie back long hair and loose clothing. 9. If a fire should break out in the lab, or if your clothing should catch fire, smother it with the fire blanket or a coat, or get under a safety shower. NEVER RUN!!!!! 10. Report any accident or injury no matter how small, to your teacher.

Safety in the Lab Follow these procedures as you clean up your work area. 1. Turn off the water and gas. Disconnect electrical devices. 2. Return materials to their places. 3. Dispose of chemicals and other materials as directed by your teacher. Place broken glass and solid substances in the proper containers Never discard materials in the sink. 4. Clean you work area. 5. Wash you hands thoroughly after working in the lab.

First Aid in the Lab InjurySafe Response BurnsApply cold water. Call your teacher immediately. Cuts and bruisesStop any bleeding by applying direct pressure. Cover cuts with a clean dressing. Apply cold compresses to bruises. Call your teacher immediately. FaintingLeave the person lying down. Loosen any tight clothing and keep crowds away. Call your teacher immediately. Foreign matter in eyeFlush with plenty of water. Use an eyewash bottle or fountain. PoisoningNote the suspected poisoning agent and call your teacher immediately. Any spills on skinFlush with large amounts of water or use safety shower. Call your teacher immediately.

Safety Items Lab/Class 1.Fire Blanket 2.Fire Extinguisher 3.First Aid Kit 4.Eyewash Station 5.Safety Shower Personal 1.Goggles 2.Apron 3.Gloves

Using a Fire Extinguisher Utilize the acronym PASS P – Pull(pull the pin) A – Aim(aim at the base of the fire) S – Squeeze(squeeze the handle) S – Sweep(sweep across the base of the fire)

How to Carry A Substance 1.Carry with 2 hands 2.Elbows in 3.Walk defensively

How to Smell a Substance We don’t just inhale a substance! It could cause us harm. We must WAFT! Wafting – Wave your hand across the substance toward your face

If You Get a Substance in Your Eye… -Utilize the eyewash station -Hold your eyes in the water for 15 – 20 mins

Safety Contract I, __________________, have read and understand the safety rules and first aid information listed above. I recognize my responsibility and pledge to observe all safety rules in the science classroom at all times. ___________________________ ___________ SignatureDate **There are 2 contracts and you need to sign both (1 for your records and 1 to turn in for a grade) **I need the contract located on the last page of the notes (fold that paper in half and tear it off to turn in).
