What will you learn ????  Safety Symbols  Investigations in the lab  Why safety is important

Safety Symbols Disposal Biological Extreme temperature Sharp object Fume Electrical Irritant Chemical Toxic Open flame Eye safety Clothing protection Animal Safety radioactivity

Disposal  Special disposal procedures need to be followed

Biological  Organisms or other biological materials that might be harmful to humans

Extreme Temperature  Objects that can burn skin by being too hot or too cold

Sharp object  Use of tool or glassware that can easily puncture or slice skin

Fume  Possible danger to respiratory tract from fumes

Toxic  Substance may be poisonous if touched, inhaled, or swallowed

Open flame  Open flame may ignite flammable chemicals, loose clothing, or hair

Eye safety  Proper eye protection should be worn at all times by anyone performing or observing science activities

Clothing protection  This symbol appears when substances could stain or burn clothing.

Animal Safety  This symbol appears when safety of animals and students must be ensured.

Radioactivity  This symbol appears when radioactive materials are used.

Think Critically  You are going to use bleach in an investigation. Bleach can irritate your skin, damage your eyes, and stain you clothes. What safety symbols should be listed with this investigation? Explain why.

Investigations in the Lab  Think before you act  Get permission before you begin  Know location of safety equipment (i.e. eyewash station, fire extinguisher)  Find and follow all safety symbols  Never eat/drink or apply make-up in lab  Report all accidents/injuries immediately  Wash hands  Put all material away as directed

Investigations in the Field Rivers Farm fields Forests  Can you think of anymore examples? Safety regulations MUST be followed in the field as well!!!!

Why is SAFETY so Important?  Decreases possibility of an accident  Prepared when accidents occur  The MOST important aspect of an investigation is to conduct it SAFELY !

Review  Which of the following cannot protect you from splashing acid? A. GogglesB. Fire extinguisher C. ApronD. Gloves

B. Fire extinguisher WAY TO GO
