Standard and Objective Standard: Content Standard 7.0 Earth and Its Place in the Universe Objective: 3.7.spi.5. identify the components of the solar system (e.g. planets, moons)

What is a planet? A planet is a large body of matter that moves around a star such as the sun

What is the solar system? The sun, the eight planets and their moons, and other objects in the sky make up our Solar System. Here is a video about our solar system: Solar System Video

The Inner Planets The planets closet to the sun Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars The inner planets are separated from the outer planets by the Asteroid Belt

Mercury and Venus The planet closest to the sun is called Mercury. It is hot, dry, and covered with craters. A CRATER is a large hole in the ground shaped like a bowl. Mercury has no moons. Venus is the second planet from the sun, it is surrounded by a think layer of clouds. It is a hot, rocky planet covered with mountains, valleys, and craters. Venus has no moons

Earth From space, Earth looks like a white blue marble. Our planet is the third planet from the sun and is the 5 th largest planet. It has the air and water needed to support life. Earth has one moon.

Mars The fourth planet from the sun, Mars, is often called the red planet because its reddish color. Mars is a rocky desert with volcanoes, valleys, and large dust storms. It has two moons.

The Outer Planets The planets that are further away from the sun Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune Much larger than inner planets Mostly made of gas

Jupiter and Saturn The fifth planet from the sun, is the biggest planet in our solar system. Jupiter is a large ball of gas. It has at least 16 moons and is surrounded by one thin ring. Saturn, like Jupiter, is a giant ball of colored gas. It has at least 18 moons and many rings. Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun.

Uranus Uranus is also a ball of gas. It is the seventh planet from the sun. From space, Uranus looks blue-green in color. It has a group of rings that are very close together. Uranus is different from the other planets because it lies on its side. It has at least 15 moons.

Neptune The eighth planet, Neptune, is a large, cold planet made of gases. It is a pale blue color and has rings that are very hard to see. Neptune has eight moons.

Summary A planet is a large body of matter that moves around a star such as the sun The sun, the eight planets and their moons, and other objects in the sky make up our Solar System. The Inner Planets are the planets closet to the sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars The Outer Planets are those planets further from the sun: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
