Digital Storytelling Photo Story 3 from Microsoft and Movie Maker

What is Digital Storytelling? The use of digital tools to assist people in telling their own stories. How can digital storytelling be used in classroom? –Special reports and projects –Field trips –Demonstration and explanations –Laboratory reports

Educational Goals of Digital Storytelling For Teachers : Appeal to the diverse learning styles of the students by using Digital Storytelling as a presentation media Generate interest, attention and motivation for the "digital generation" kids in our classrooms. Capitalize on the creative talents of your own students as they begin to research and tell stories of their own. Publish student work on the Internet for viewing and critiquing by others.

Educational Goals of Digital Storytelling For Students Learn to use the Internet to research rich, deep content while analyzing and synthesizing a wide range of content. Develop communications skills by learning to ask questions, express opinions, construct narratives and write for an audience. Increase computer skills using software that combines a variety of multimedia including: text, still images, audio, video and web publishing.

Thoughts on Student Projects Set a time limit! (30 seconds to 1 minute) –Projects must be graded. –All include material is important! Give credit where credit is due. –Site music source –Site photographer (even if self)

Photo Story 3 Photo Story 3 is a free download from Microsoft. With a single click, you can Touch-up Crop Rotate pictures Remove red-eye Add special effects Add soundtracks Add narration to your photo stories. Personalize with titles and captions. Small file sizes make it easy to send your photo stories in an or watch them on your TV, a computer, or a Windows Mobile–based portable device.

Create a New Project Select NEXT

Import Images Photo Story allows import of most common image formats, including.bmp,.dib,.eps,.gif,.jhif, ljpe,.jpeg,.jpg,.pcd,.pcx,.png,.psd,.rle,.tga, and.tif. You can import a maximum of 300 images per project.

Open the folder with saved images

Select the desired images To import some photos, but not all, select the first photo, then hold down the CTRL key and select only those photos you want by clicking once on them, then click "OK."

Arrange you images Click on the image to move (continue to hold down the mouse) and drag the image to the desired location and drop. Continue moving images until all are in the correct order.

Edit Images 1.Select the image that needs editing. 2.It will appear in the larger window. 3.Select Edit

Edit the Image There are 3 tabs at the top. From the first tab – rotate or crop the image.

To Crop and Rotate 1. To rotate, select the direction to rotate. 2. Place a check in the crop box. 3. A rectangle will appear. Drag the edges of the rectangle to cover the area to keep. 4. Next click on CLOSE and save the changes. The image will be cropped. The original image is not altered!

Auto Fix

The effect(s) can be applied to all pictures if desired.

Save your project Save the project after each addition and change. Warning: By default, Photo Story automatically saves projects into the "My Videos" folder. Be sure to change to your personal folder when saving EVERYTHING.

Add a Title or Caption Select the image to create a title on. Add the text - The title can have a maximum of 1,024 characters. The text wraps in the picture preview area. Apply desired characteristics –1. font, size and color –2. alignment –3. location on page Add text 123

Narrate the Story

Customize Motion The default motion settings may be used or you may customize. The duration of each image may also be determined.

Change the Transition between Images

Add Background Music This feature allows students to be creative and removes ALL copyright issues!

Create Music The Genre has many choices. The Style has multiple choice as does the Band type and the Mood. Next there is the choice of tempo and intensity. The mix and match possiblities are endless. Click the Play button to preview and if the music created is not what the creator wanted, start the selection process over. Music may be different for each image or it may be the same for the entire story. There may be music for some slides and not for others. If there is no music for a slide, narration may be added. A slide may not have both music and narration. Save your project!

Select desired location to save the project. The default is My Documents/My Videos

Movie Maker Movie Maker organizes your video, music, and pictures into collections. Drag items in your collections to your storyboard to make a movie. Allows more versatility with titles and credits. Allows title overlays.

Storyboard Shows images and the transition applied between each. Also shows the video effects that have been added to the image/video.

Splitting and Deleting Clips To delete certain sections of the movie, move the blue “scrubber” line to the desired location. Hit “Ctrl L” or from the menu choose “Clip” then “Split” Your movie has now been segmented into different parts. Split the clip again at the desired location to give you multiple segments, then click on the segment you wish to take out and hit delete.

Muting Narration If you are using a clip from Discovery Education and you want to have your own narration you need to mute the audio. To do this, highlight the clip. Click “Clip” “Audio” and then “Mute”. Repeat for each segment you want muted

Adding Custom Narration To narrate your timeline, click “Tools” then “Narrate Timeline”. When you are ready to begin click “Start Narration”. After you are finished save the narration

Saving the Movie You can play your movie back while editing pictures or video. View it in the window to the right. When you are finished click “Save to my computer”. Also, save your movie often! Save Project as well as movie!
