Measuring the Impact of Purdue’s Global Partners Program for Student Academic Affairs Staff Katherine Yngve, Intercultural Learning Specialist 2014 OIRAE Assessment Forum

Purdue International Students = #3 in USA 2014 OIRAE Assessment Forum International Student Enrollment Trends Undergraduates Graduates and Professionals Total

Ideal GPP participants possess the following characteristics :  Purdue staff or faculty who has never before travelled to China  Willing to participate in Chinese language classes offered by Purdue's Confucius Institute prior to departure  Willing to spend 10 days in China in July & to facilitate a pre- orientation session in Beijing and in Shanghai for new admitted students from China 2014 OIRAE Assessment Forum

GPP has three main goals:  Increase participant knowledge and understanding of a particular culture so that they are personally better able to service/help international students  With the increased knowledge and understanding of a particular culture, it is expected that participants will share their new-found knowledge with colleagues in a formal setting upon return  Participants will be better able and better equipped to promote study abroad programs within their colleges by assisting their colleagues to also promote such programs OIRAE Assessment Forum

Program Assessment Model  Summer 2012 :Participant Evaluation Form  Summer 2013:  Sojourn Readiness Assessment (Survey), post-orientation  Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) administered pre- departure & upon return to US  Participant Evaluation Form  Summer 2014:  Sojourn Readiness Assessment  Pre/post IDI – with delayed timing of post-test (late Fall)  Participant Evaluation Form  Reflective Journals  Multi-Cohort Focus Groups (Early October) 2014 OIRAE Assessment Forum

Theoretical Framework: Bennett’s DMIS 2014 OIRAE Assessment Forum

2014 GPP IDI Pre Test 2014 OIRAE Assessment Forum

GPP 2014 Group Take Aways  Understanding and awareness of cultural differences is effective at times and not effective at times  Sense that we are on the right track when dealing with difference  In establishing common goals, policies and practices may not attend deeply to difference  Struggle to create solutions that value differences  Challenged to identify cross-cultural adaptive policies to guide efforts across differences 2014 OIRAE Assessment Forum

Qualitative Analysis: GPP 2014 Journals AAC&U Intercultural Learning RubricMalleus & Slattery (2014)  Personal travel blogs as texts for studying intercultural interactions (SpringerPlus, 3:211)  Culture Shock  Cross-Cultural Comparison  Communication Challenge  Intercultural Adaptation + Cultural Appreciation 2014 OIRAE Assessment Forum

Qualitative Analysis Focus Group *All three cohorts* Written Reflection 1.Participating in GPP increased my knowledge & understanding of China in the following concrete way or ways: 2.Since returning from GPP in China, I have made the following adjustments to my advising practice: 3.Since returning from GPP in China, I have been able to share new- found knowledge with Purdue colleagues in the following concrete ways: 4.Since returning from GPP in China, I have been more supportive of study abroad in the following concrete ways: 2014 OIRAE Assessment Forum

Qualitative Analysis Focus Group Findings 2014 OIRAE Assessment Forum

Qualitative Analysis Sample of Reported Outcomes  “I helped train my departmental colleagues with a fierce passion for helping international students.”  I created a study abroad program to Singapore for students in our College –something I’d never have had the confidence to do prior to GPP.  After seeing the impact of GPP among my cohort, I influenced our College to make a financial commitment to sending more advisors abroad.  I now work harder to ensure concise, easy-to-understand communications (written & verbal) to ALL my advisees.  I encourage students to take study abroad risks, because “If I can do it…” 2014 OIRAE Assessment Forum
