Lesson 8: Why Are Bees Important By Megan Mason

Internet Resources This lesson will use a video from Discovery Education called “How They Live: Bees.” It will also use a series of PDF’s from the Longwood Garden’s website. /BeeAmazed.htmlhttp:// /BeeAmazed.html. It is up to you whether you want to print the PDF’s out or have students view them on the classroom computers. The PDF’s are located at the bottom of the webpage. They are called Inside the HiveInside the Hive What Bees See Bee Houses Busy as a Bee Bee Boogie Oh No! A Bee! Bees and Plants Yummy Honey. What Bees See Bee HousesBusy as a BeeBee Boogie Oh No! A Bee!Bees and Plants Yummy Honey A set of PDF’s for each students or the classroom computers with the PDF’s already pulled up. Use a third sheet of large newsprint or over head transparencies. Teacher computer connected to a TV or projector.

Label the third sheet “What We Have learned About Bees.” Bring up the video on the teacher computer so that it is ready to play. Allow 10 minutes for brainstorming and 10 minutes for drawing the bees. Procedure 5, tell the students that we will now learn a little about bees. Introduce the video and tell students that they need to write down any important information they learn. A scrap piece of paper will work for this. Play the video (15 minutes) for the students. After the students have watched the video and taken notes, go over what they have learned. Write facts about bees on the paper titled “What We Have Learned About Bees.” Have students read the PFD’s on Bees independently in class or for homework. Have them circle facts that they would like to add to the newsprint paper. Allow students to add the facts later on.
