LOGO Cell Structure and Function Bonnie Zhang

Lesson Objectives The students will be able to find the nucleus in the cell by following along in the lesson and filling in their handout. 1 They will also be able to identify basic functions of different parts of the cell through the same activity. 2 They will be able to tell the difference between plant and animal cells by learning about the aspects that differentiate the two. 3

Language Objectives The students will engage in writing a short summary that explains a cells structure. 1 The students will be placed into groups where they will be able to discuss any questions among their group members and if they cannot be answered that way, then they may pose the question to the teacher. 2 For the lesson the students will be asked to follow along and fill out a handout that will be given to them. They must fill out the necessary information that is not given on the handout. 3

Higher Order Thinking Skills Knowledge Comprehension ApplicationSynthesis The lesson will teach students about something they cannot really learn outside of the classroom (the internet can teach but it’s not very effective) and the students will be able to teach this knowledge to others. The knowledge includes new vocabulary as well as learning about the small building blocks that are found in all forms of life. The students will be asked to do a homework assignment that tests whether or not the student comprehends the content that was learned during the lesson. They will also be asked questions in which they need to restate what has been taught to them by the teacher. For the homework they will also need to summarize and model what they have learned about cells and their organelles with functions. The students will need to apply what they comprehend of the lesson in order to complete the homework assignments. If they cannot apply their knowledge of understanding the content, then they will do poorly on the homework assignments. The students will be able to create a 3D model of a cell.

Key Questions/Tasks 1 The students will be able to identify the different organelles inside of a plant and animal cells. 2 They will be able to answer questions about the basic functions of organelles in cells. 3 When given images of organelles the students will be able to identify them.

Materials Needed  3D model of a cell  Labeled pictures of cells (both real and not real)  Labeled pictures of structures inside cells (both real and not real)  A handout that will be given by the teacher; the handout will have pictures of both animal and plant cells that are labeled along with a corresponding chart  Paper that the students may take additional notes on  Writing utensils (teacher may have extra if a student cannot borrow from a peer when they have forgotten to bring their own)

Show a 3d model of a cell and give a brief explanation of its parts. Then describe different parts in further detail. Show images and have short explanations written next to them identifying the individual parts of a cell or explaining the function of an organelle. Have a short quiz about the lesson that is not graded for points but to see how much the students already know about cell structure. Ask and answer questions throughout the lesson in order to make sure that the students understand everything. Give out homework. Procedure Stage 1Stage 2Stage 3
