Distance Learning Technology Taking the classroom to the student; Bringing the student to the classroom. UI Div. of Continuing Education

General computer requirements to use Adobe Connect Personal equipment for student participation Instructor equipment for non-blended teaching from office or home Blended Classroom equipment for interactive instruction Small rooms Larger rooms Analog-to-Digital Adaptive Devices Equipment choices for various teaching/learning environments What Do I Need for Adobe Connect

General Computer Requirements Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate (32-bit edition, or 64-bit edition with 32-bit browser) Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 or later Mozilla Firefox 3.x Adobe Flash Player 9 or later Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate, Business, or Enterprise (32-bit edition, or 64-bit edition with 32-bit browser) Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or later Mozilla Firefox 2.x, 3.x Adobe Flash Player 9 or later Microsoft Windows XP Professional or Home Edition with Service Pack 2 Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or later Mozilla Firefox 2.x, 3.x Adobe Flash Player 9 or later

General Computer Requirements Windows hardware requirements Windows XP: 450-MHz Intel® Pentium® II or faster processor or equivalent (512 MB of RAM, 1 GB recommended) Windows Vista: 1-GHz Intel Pentium II or faster processor or equivalent (1 GB of RAM, 2 GB recommended) Mac OS X v10.4, 10.5, 10.6 (Intel) Mozilla Firefox 2.x, 3.x Safari 2.x, 3.x, and 4.x Adobe Flash Player 9 or later Mac OS X v10.4 (PowerPC) Safari 2.x Mozilla Firefox 2.x, 3.x Adobe Flash Player 9 or later Mac OS hardware requirements 500-MHz PowerPC G3 or faster or 1.83-GHz Intel Core Duo or faster processor 128 MB of RAM (512 MB recommended) Additional requirements Bandwidth: DSL/cable (wired connection recommended)

Student on Personal Computer Remote student logging into the virtual classroom USB Headset with microphone  PnP simplicity  Best voice reproduction and sound isolation  Prevents echo to other participants  Be aware of mute/volume controls Webcam (if required for the course) Broadband Internet, wired connection  Recommend 1Mbps downstream  Speed test during time of day that class will be held 

Instructor on Office or Home Computer Non-blended EXW course, all students are remote USB Headset with microphone  PnP simplicity  Best voice reproduction and sound isolation  Prevents echo to other participants Webcam  Logitech is recommended (do not run logitech app) Broadband Internet, wired connection  If connecting from home, test early, test often! Computer must not have touchscreen enabled  This is a bug in the latest version of Connect; it slows the computer function as the meeting progresses

Blended Classroom Equipment Small Room Interactive Instruction Objective is to provide as similar an experience for the online students as the in-class students. This includes: Interaction with the instructor Interaction with the other class members Presentations Small group activities Access to classroom resources Our technology needs to take advantage of the tools available with the Adobe Connect classroom

Vaddio with mic-triggered presets Two-camera system for room coverage Room projector and screen for viewing Boundary microphones placed for paired student locations Pressure pads for board or lectern locations Room speakers for return audio Echo-cancellation installed to prevent feedback to remote students N207 LC is sample classroom Multi-camera system with video- follow-audio image stitching Multi-microphone base providing room audio pickup and camera triangulation Multi-monitors for viewing around the camera system Built-in speaker with echo- cancellation for return audio 212 CEF is sample classroom Polycom CX5000 (360 Camera) Classroom Video/Audio Systems Small room for seminar

Touch Screen Tablet Computer Stylus or dual-touch sensitive screen PowerPoint annotation and/or simulated whiteboard screens Whiteboard application in Connect Excellent choice for working from home or office in a non- blended classroom environment Interactive with projected computer image, touch screen or location sensing Mimio is a portable system utilizing an existing whiteboard and projector Allows for “traditional” stand-up presentation in a classroom that is transmitted to online students Mimio or Smartboard Classroom Annotation Systems Whiteboard or Overhead Projector Simulation Both systems incorporate a second computer to act as a presenter in the Connect virtual classroom. This separates that tablet from the classroom management computer so the classroom services are not impacted by the bug.

N207 LC System and Layout Basic GAC room equipment in rack Class seating is in the round Two-camera system (Vaddio) to cover all locations in the room Camera presets are keyed to active microphone (8 mics in room) Touch-to-talk boundary mics Single projector to wall-mounted screen

Seating in the round provides the best use of the Polycom camera. Placing the monitors between the viewer and the camera allows for the best view for the participant and the most direct face-forward view in the virtual classroom. A Mimio is attached to the whiteboard with a short-throw projector (Canon LV8235-UST) for annotation. 212 CEF System and Layout 360 Degree Camera: Polycom CX5000 Room speaker, mic array, USB con- nection, echo-cancellation

201 CEF System and Layout Basic GAC room equipment in lectern Traditional Classroom seating One-camera system (Vaddio) to cover instructor with IR sensored tracking across front of room Wireless Lav mic for instructor Wired area mics (Acoustic Magic I) for student pickup (no student camera view) Single projector to wall-mounted screen

“Traditional” ICN Classroom State-wide centrally managed videoconferencing system Analog system based on a 20+ year-old design Traditional Classroom seating Multi-camera system (Crestron machine controlled) with Instructor, student, and document cameras feeding a video switcher Lavaliere mic for instructor Push-to-talk mics for student pickup (triggers camera preset for student view) Single projector to wall-mounted screen Can be adapted to digital delivery over Connect or Elluminate with adapters and creative routing of signals

Video input to the computer Osprey 260e Video/Audio Internal Capture Card Dazzle DVC 100 (Composite-to-USB) Audio input to the computer Alesis MultiMix 8 USB audio mixer Acoustic Magic II USB microphone Plantronics DSP headset-to-USB adapter Pinnacle Video Transfer (direct to MPEG-4) Equipment choices we have made and would recommend Bridging the Analog-to-Digital Divide
