OCTOBER 18, 2011 Satisfactory Academic Progress

New SAP Policy Elements 1 st SAP evaluation after 7/1/11 must meet new rules (excluding summer term)  UWM 1 st evaluation under new SAP policy is end of Fall 2011 SAP policy must contain qualitative (GPA) and quantitative (Timeframe and Pace) measurements of student’s progress at each evaluation Academic Plans – new component to SAP  For use by students who will require more than 1 semester to re- establish SAP  Requires collaboration with Academic Advisors

Qualitative Measure Students continue to be governed by the performance standards of the school or college in which they are enrolled  Academic cancellation by the student’s school or college will cause the student to be ineligible for financial aid  This measure remains unchanged from old SAP policy

Quantitative Measure Students must meet the following two quantitative standards:  Timeframe  Pace Biggest changes occur in these two measurements Students now reviewed on a cumulative basis

Timeframe All students are expected to finish their program within a maximum timeframe that cannot exceed 150% of the number of CREDITS required to complete a degree All credits are counted in timeframe – even those in which the student did not receive financial aid

Pace Students must also demonstrate measurable progress toward earning a degree by successfully completing two-thirds (66.67%) of all attempted credits Pace is determined as of the census date Starting Pace will be determined by DES information Pace % = Total # of Completed Credits Total # of Attempted Credits

Example Student started Fall with 59 attempted credits and 40 completed credits. Student was enrolled in 15 credits but only completed 9 credits. Is the student within his Timeframe? Does the student make Pace? Timeframe: Student has 180 credit max and is at 74 (59+15) credits attempted. Student is ok. Pace prior to Fall semester: 40/59=67.80% Pace after Fall semester: 49/74=66.22%  Completed: 40+9=49  Attempted: 59+15=74  Student is NOT making Pace. Must be 66.67% or above cumulatively.  Student will be automatically placed on Financial Aid Warning Status PACE IS CUMULATIVE! It does not matter that the student completed 9 of 15 for the Fall semester.

Elements Affecting Timeframe and Pace All of the following are counted as credits attempted and completed in the pace % and timeframe totals:  Transfer credits  Remedial credits  Repeated courses  Incomplete courses  Withdrawals  Consortium credits  Study Abroad credits  Changing Majors

Financial Aid Warning Status Students not meeting SAP standards are first automatically assigned a Financial Aid Warning Status Warning Status assigned for one payment period only  No appeal/student action necessary to place on Warning  Eligible for Title IV aid during Warning At the end of the Financial Aid Warning, student must either:  Meet SAP standards again by meeting Timeframe and Pace OR  Be placed in an Ineligible Status

Ineligible Status If student does not meet SAP standards after one semester of Warning, student placed in an Ineligible Status No Title IV aid unless:  Student meets SAP standards again  Student successfully appeals and is placed on Financial Aid Probation  Student is following Academic Plan that ensures SAP by specific point in time

Appeals Students can appeal SAP status only if it is reasonable to assume student can make SAP standards after 1 semester Students meet with Financial Aid Advisor Cannot grant more than 1 appeal for the same non- academic circumstance

Financial Aid Probation Status Financial Aid Probation status assigned to a student who fails to make SAP and has successfully appealed Student has Title IV eligibility for one payment period After Probation period must either:  Meet SAP standards again by meeting Timeframe and Pace OR  Be placed back into Ineligible status if not meeting SAP standards

Academic Plans In lieu of an appeal, a student can follow an Academic Plan that would ensure SAP is achieved by a specified point in time Academic Plans are developed on a student-by- student basis

Academic Plans Academic Plan Form obtained from Financial Aid Advisor Student then meets with Academic Advisor to develop plan  Plan for number of credits/semesters required to re-establish SAP Student responsible to return the completed Academic Plan Form to Financial Aid Department

Academic Plans Financial Aid Department monitors student’s progress at end of each semester Will continue to be eligible for financial aid as long as meet Academic Plan requirements No longer eligible for financial aid if student does not meet Academic Plan requirements  Student will be required to meet with Financial Aid Advisor and have an appealable reason to be able to develop a new/revised Academic Plan

Regaining Eligibility Students can re-establish eligibility for financial aid only by taking action that brings the student back to meeting SAP standards Progress is reviewed and updated at the end of each semester

Things to Note Academic Advisors will be assisting with Academic Plans Timeframe is cumulative by credits Pace is 66.67% - cannot be rounded to 66% or 66.66% Drops/Withdrawals:  Snapshot on 10 th day of classes (attempted)  Completed credits when grades post (completed)
