AC_2002_01 Trends ……… Services: IPmc, IPv6, QoS, MPLS, GMPLS 10 Gb/s, 2.5 Gb/s IP over WDM core, POS Higher Speeds STM-256 / 40 Gb/s will require a massive investment from the carriers on their optical infrastructure 40 Gb/s equipment is currently not “palm-size” Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet Metro Aggregation Optical Infrastructure provided by carriers – trend is to move towards private ownership of dark fibre and ‘own’ the optical transport and its integration with IP.

AC_2002_01 Update on collaboration with UKERNA 10 Gb/s development testbed using 12400’s and 7600’s Used for testing of video conferencing and video distribution Used for MB-NG – Managed Bandwidth – Next Generation - led by High Energy Physicists at UCL to investigate traffic engineering and prepare for distributed GRID computing traffic.

AC_2002_01 Typical collaborations with Universities PhD students collaborate with Cisco on projects of interest to both parties Funding comes from Cisco in Europe or through the global Cisco University Research Programme Maybe matched by external govt funding At UCL they have ported SIP based voice code to IPv6 At Cambridge they are doing detailed analysis of network statistics allowing PTTs to apply usage based billing accurately. At the Neumann Institute for Computing in Germany they are designing a prototype bandwidth broker for networks.
