Corvus Energy Customers & Partners

Energy Grid in Developed Nations Advanced energy storage is a key enabler for long term sustainability Existing grid built around remote, central generation and a distribution system Grid is stressed and significant investment required to modernize Difficult to get more transmission lines into load centers Distributed energy key to grid efficiency and cost effectiveness Smart Grid: – Grid devices can now provide information about energy flows – Enabling monitoring and control of distribution systems – Potential to make grid dramatically more efficient, while maintaining reliability – Distributed generation and energy storage is the key to making it work

Smart Grid: Vancouver, Canada Corvus Energy & Alpha Technologies: Installing 1MWh of batteries at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver beginning in February 2013 – Phase 1: UPS in 3 buildings: A bioenergy generation facility A mass spectrometer lab An advanced energy research lab – Phase 2: Alpha Technologies, Smart Grid system to interconnect & operate the 3 facilities Dispatch the energy storage to the grid – reduce peak – provide frequency support – provide VAR support Use the results to plan wider deployments – postpone/eliminate future transmission lines & substation upgrades

Energy Grid in Developing Nations Advanced energy storage is a key enabler for long term sustainability Existing grid built around remote, central generation and a distribution system, but unreliable and available only hours a day Residential, commercial, industrial customers use diesel generators for reliable power – Diesels run almost 24/7 – Most of the time at partial load, so very inefficient Distributed energy key to increased efficiency and cost effectiveness of diesel generation Smart Grid: – Energy storage system can detect the gird, when available and use it – When the grid is not available, will run on batteries until depleted and then dispatch the diesel generator to serve load and recharge the batteries – Diesels only run at peak efficiency and cycle several times per day Dramatically reduces fuel usage and air emissions

Storage Applications in Nigeria Grid is so weak, most homes and businesses run diesels 24/7 Diesel Reduction: – Enables diesels to run at their peak efficiency reduces fuel usage reduces maintenance – Enables diesels to be shut down, with the batteries serving the load – Improves power quality – Reduces emissions Residential/Small Commercial (26kWh/45.5kWh) – In February 2013, deploying to a house and a gas station Telecom (26kWh) – Deploying to telecom stations Large Commercial/Industrial (100kWh – 1MWh) – Submitted proposals for golf course, large water treatment plants – Hotels, condominiums expressed interest for large scale systems

Energy Storage is the Key to Sustainability Developed Nations – Grid Dependent Make grid more efficient – Increase overall system efficiency (capacity factor) – Reduce losses – Peak load reduction – Frequency support – VAR support Facilitate renewable generation integration Developing Nations – Grid Independent Make distributed generation more efficient/reduce maintenance Reduce emissions Strengthen existing grid and facilitate greater availability “Sustainable Grids That Meet in the Middle”

Thank You!
