Hand washing and Other Ways to Beat Germs Kitchen Hygiene Hand washing and Other Ways to Beat Germs

DISCLAIMER! Before you start creating all kinds of mouth watering goodies, there are a few things you must do. These points are important! They will assure that the food you prepare won’t make you, or anyone else, sick.

Hands Your hands can spread bacteria and get into the food you are prepping. 80% of infectious diseases (like the flu) are spread through touch. 95% of people say they wash their hands after using the toilet. However when 8,000 people were monitored across five large cities in the US, they found the actual number to be more like 67%. Ewww!!

When should I wash my hands? Before preparing food Before eating a meal or a snack After using the washroom After touching pets After sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose After handling money After touching raw meat, poultry or fish

Steps to Hand Washing Wet hand with warm, running water Apply soap Wash vigorously for 10-20 seconds (sing your ABCs or Happy Birthday twice) Rinse your hands Dry with a paper towel or hot air dryer Turn off faucet with paper towel

Dish Washing It is important to wash dishes because bacteria grows on dishes or utensils that have not been cleaned thoroughly

Steps to Dish Washing Step 1: Scrape off any leftover food into the garbage Step 2: Pre-rinse your dishes before putting them in your wash water.

Steps to Dish Washing Step 3: Sort dishes into group to wash in order: Order to wash dishes: Glasses Silverware Cups, bowls, saucers, plates Pots & pans

Steps to Dish Washing Step 4: Washing the dishes (in order) in warm, soapy water. All you need is a few squirts of soap to create enough bubbles to wash your dishes in.

Steps to Dish Washing Step 5: Rinse in hot hot hot water! Why? Hot water helps to kill any leftover bacteria and sanitize the dishes

Steps to Dish Washing Step 6: Drying the Dishes The best way to dry dishes is to let them air dry… however, we don’t usually have the time. Make sure you’re using a dry, clean towel to dry the dishes.

Clean Up What other clean up should be completed after washing the dishes? Sweeping the floor Sanitizing the countertops Sanitizing the table Drying the sink Emptying the sink stopper of any food Putting away the recipes

Personal Cleanliness Keep the kitchen clean! Avoid touching your face or hair while working in the kitchen – If you do, wash your hands! Use separate towels for drying your hands and for wiping the dishes. If you have an open cut or sore on your hands, use plastic gloves for handling food. Tie your hair back or cover it so it will stay out of the food.

Personal Cleanliness Be sure your clothes are clean. Avoid loose items. Roll up long sleeves. Wear an apron! If a dish towel or utensil falls on the floor, do not use it again until it has been washed. Always use a separate spoon for tasting—NEVER the same one you are using for stirring. No cell phones in the kitchens!
