RULE OF THUMB: You should ALWAYS leave the kitchen cleaner than you found it! This means that you should clean up any messes or dirty spots that you see even if you aren’t the one who made the mess!

STEP #1 – SCRAPE AND PRE-RINSE DISHES. You don’t want “chunks” or “floaties” in your wash water. This will take off any “sauces” or small food particles that might make your dishwater dirty. Scrape food scraps into the garbage container or disposal. If using the disposal, remember to turn on running water with it to wash the food particles down the drain.

STEP #2 – SORT AND STACK DISHES BY GROUPS This makes it quicker and easier to wash them. Wash dishes from cleanest to dirtiest. Glasses Silverware Cups, bowls, saucers, and plates Pots and Pans… by this point you may need to replace your dish water!

STEP #3 – WASH IN HOT, SOAPY WATER Make sure you are using clean water and dish soap… not hand soap! Soaps are formulated individually for specific cleaning needs. Hand soap will not do a good job on dishes, and vice versa.

STEP #4 – RINSE IN HOT WATER The hotter the water, the better! They will dry quicker and rinse better. Do NOT burn yourself by using water that is too hot!

STEP #5 – AIR DRY OR DRY WITH A CLEAN TOWEL Put dishes in the dish drainer to “drip dry” while you are rinsing. Use a clean towel to dry them. Never use a towel that has been used on hands, counters, or floors. This would be cross contaminating the clean dishes. Put clean and dry dishes away.

STEP #6 – RUN THE DISPOSAL AND RINSE THE SINK This washes any food particles and soap down the drain.

STEP #8 – WIPE OUT THE SINK, FAUCET AND DRAINER. PUT THE DRAINER AWAY. Polish the sink and faucet with the clean towel. This helps prevent hard water build up on the sink and faucet.
