ACE Design - Guiding Principles ACE is an open sourced, internet-based, open-access, Arctic-focused, environmental research and decision- support system that integrates data from existing remote sensing assets, products from existing and new environmental models, and in-situ reporting to provide monitoring, analysis, and visualization based on earth observation data and modeling. These products may be layered within an embedded KML- compliant viewer (e.g., Google Earth) and integrated into a community-based collaborative environment, as well as exposed through an Application Programming Interface (API). 2

ACE Current Capabilities Map Capabilities – Map Panes Open at least two each of 2D/3D map viewing panes Map panes maintain their own geographic region Map panes maintain their own map projections Map panes maintain their own zoom level Map panes support independent layering of data – Provide a static selection of 2-D Mercator and Arctic Polar Stereographic projections – Limited support for: Printing and screen capture Measuring distance and area Layering NetCDF / geoTIFF based data – Map Layers Provide pre-populated Arctic Data sets in map pane catalogs Layer KML based Data sets Layer KMZ based data in Google Earth plug-in Layer WMS based Data sets Web Browser Capabilities – Open at least two web browser panes – Provide access to ACNFS data Collaboration Capabilities – Content Management Web-based Portal Create public and private collaboration areas Allow authenticated users to upload data sources to collaboration areas – Share workspaces, files, KML, WMS, and Webpages to multiple users – Chat Capabilities Conduct 1 on 1 and controlled group chat sessions Chat history Chat translation Monitor chat rooms An API that exposes the publicly viewable vetted data sets for external access Search Capabilities – Data Catalog – System level User Authentication Capabilities – Controlled secure access to ACE – Assignment of specific user roles and responsibilities to users – Access restrictions that support controlled access to private data 4

ACE Future Capabilities Map Capabilities – Map Projection Transformations – Route Planning – Setting of user preferences for Earth Coordinate format – Allow generation of user defined polygons – Draw a line, point, or region and determine available asset: within the region within a specified distance – Enhanced Support for: Printing and screen capture Measuring distance and area – Map Layers Layer NetCDF based data Layer HDF, GRIB, Shapefiles Improved geoTIFF support Worldview file support Layer animation Data age indicators Collaboration Capabilities – Enhanced Content Management Web-based Portal Versioning Calendar function Alert notification system – Enhanced Chat Mobile device specific versions of ACE tools Enhanced API capability 5
