THE EARLY YEARS Born in Denison, Texas to David Jacob Eisenhower and Ida Elizabeth Stover on October 14, 1890 Third of seven sons Raised in Abilene, Kansas Originally born as David Dwight Eisenhower, but was called Dwight because his father was also David Eventually changed name to Dwight David Eisenhower when he enrolled at West Point

The Early Years Ancestors immigrated from Germany to Lancaster, Pennsylvania then travelled west As a child, Dwight was always interested in the old timers’ stories of the “Wild West” Was a very popular person in High School Played as a tackle in football and an outfielder in baseball Graduated from Abilene High School in 1909

Enrolled at the United States Military Academy at West Point in June 1911 Parents were against militarism, but didn’t object to him enrolling because he would get an education Graduated in 1915 and served at various camps until 1918 In 1916 he married Maime Geneva Doud They later had two children Ike in the army

During WWI he rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel of the new tank corps Trained new tank crews throughout the war After WWI he was assigned to Camp Meade, MD. Eisenhower, along with George Patton, were strong advocates of tank warfareGeorge Patton In 1925 he enrolled in the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas

IKE IN THE ARMY Served as a Battalion Commander at Fort Benning, Georgia Promoted to Brigadier General in October 1941 After Pearl Harbor, Ike was assigned to the General Staff in D.C. to make plans to defeat Germany and Japan In 1942, he was appointed Commanding General of the European Theater of Operations

Later gave up the European Theater position to become Supreme Commander of the North African Theater Oversaw landing at Sicily and Invasion of Italy Was promoted to Supreme Commander of the European Theater Planned and oversaw the invasion of Normandy, especially D-DayD-Day IKE IN THE ARMY

Was promoted to General of the Army in 1944, putting him in control of the allies F.D.R. had him coordinate with all of the other allied generals, and even Stalin himself. Named Supreme Commander of the NATO forces in Europe in 1950 Retired from the Army in 1952 IKE IN THE ARMY

PRESIDENT EISENHOWER In 1948, both parties tried to nominate him for President for their party, but he declined both offers In 1952, he accepted the Republican Party’s nomination, and beat Robert Taft for the party’s spot as Presidential Nominee His campaign slogan was “I Like Ike”, and criticized Truman’s policies involving Korea, Communism, and Corruption Promised to end the Korean war and maintain a strong fight against Communism

President Eisenhower Eisenhower and his running mate, Richard Nixon, won in a landslide victory On January 20, 1953 he was inaugurated as the 34 th President of the U.S.A. First Republican to be President in 20 years Eisenhower was the last general to serve as President On July 27 th an armistice is signed with North Korea

President Eisenhower He expanded or continued most New Deal programs In September, 1955 he suffered a heart attack and was in a hospital for almost seven weeks In 1956 he was re-elected to his second term One of his most famous achievements in his presidency was the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 The major reason was to create an easy means of evacuation of cities in the event of a Soviet attack

President Eisenhower It was also meant to be an easy way to move logistics across the country and be a building block for the economy On November 25, 1957 Eisenhower suffered a mild stroke in the Oval Office This left him with a slight speech impediment He also wrote a letter of authority that gave Nixon full power if he was incapacitated

This prompted the 25 th Amendment, which outlined when the Vice-President can take over power in the event the President was incapacitated During his presidency, the U.S. was able to develop nuclear power, and the U.S.S.R. developed this as well shortly after This increased tension between the two countries, and fear of a third world war grew President Eisenhower

Eisenhower stated that nuclear weapons was the most effective way to deter military action by the Soviets against the “Free World” The launching of the Soviet satellite Sputnik 1 into space prompted the creation of NASA in 1958 Eisenhower oversaw the admission of Alaska and Hawaii to the U.S. During the 1960 election, Eisenhower was reluctant to back up his vice president of 8 years, Richard Nixon President Eisenhower

He did, however, campaign against John F. Kennedy by comparing the experience Nixon has to Kennedy’s lack thereof However, when asked what decisions Nixon made in those eight years, he jokingly stated "Give me a week and I might think of something.“ Nixon blamed his close loss to Kennedy on this statement President Eisenhower

His Legacy Lives On After his term was over, Eisenhower and his wife, Maime, retired to their farm The farm is located next to the battlefield at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania The farm was sold to the National Park Service in 1960, and after his death it became the National Eisenhower Historical Site He rarely got involved in politics after retiring, only speaking at various conventions and campaigns

Dwight David Eisenhower passed away on March 28, 1969 in Washington D.C. After various funeral services, his body was put on a train to Abilene, Kansas He was buried next to his son that died at age three in 1921, and later his wife who died in 1979 After his death, many things were named in his honor His Legacy Lives On

The U.S.S. Dwight D. Eisenhower, a Nimitz-Class aircraft carrier, was named after him The Eisenhower College in New York was founded in 1965 Hospitals in Rancho Mirage, California, and Fort Gordon, Georgia were named in his honor Many statues of Eisenhower are located across the world His Legacy Lives On

Maime Eisenhower’s birthplace was named a historical site His second son, John Sheldon Doud Eisenhower, joined the army and coincidentally graduated from West Point on D-DayJohn Sheldon Doud Eisenhower The first of John’s children, Dwight David II, married Richard Nixon’s daughter Julie in 1968 John retired from the army as a brigadier general He served as the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium from 1969 to 1971 His Legacy Lives On

Eisenhower is best known for his leadership in World War II He led the allied forces in North Africa, and eventually D-Day and the march through Europe His most influential presidential action was the creation of the Interstate Highway System He is regarded by many as being one of the top ten Presidents in U.S. history His Legacy Lives On
