December 1937, he decides to retire from the United States Army.

6. World War II
July 1941, he was recalled to active service in the United States Army as a Major General .
March 1942, Roosevelt ordered him to leave the Philippines and he promised "I came out of Bataan and I shall return."
1942,he was appointed Supreme Allied Commander, South West Pacific Area .
December 1944, he promoted to the newly created rank of five star General of the Army.
February 1945,he fulfilled his promise to returned and liberated Manila.
