6 World War II July 1941, he was recalled to active service in the United States Army as a Major General . March 1942, Roosevelt ordered him to leave the Philippines and he promised "I came out of Bataan and I shall return." 1942,he was appointed Supreme Allied Commander, South West Pacific Area .
