History, Development and Planning

Identifying the Gap Initially, we focused on Intermediate Algebra (MAT1033), where we saw a significant gap in success. Gateway Mathematics course (1 st college level) Significant difference in course structure and expectations from remedial courses *Changes in Developmental Education have resulted in expansion and tailoring of the program

Expansion to Gear Up The success of the initial Math Up lead the Learning Commons to expand offerings to other topics important to students’ academic success.

Gear Up Time Line Fall 2012 Math Up for MAT1033 Spring 2013 Math Up for MAT1033 Digital Literacy Week/ Workshops Fall 2013/Spring 2014 Math Up for MAT1033 Tech-Up Digital Literacy Workshops Math Up for MAT0028 Chem UpWord Up Summer 2014 Math Up for MAT1033 Daytona/Deland Math Up for MAT0028 Daytona Fall 2014 Math Up for MAT1033 in Daytona Tech-Up Digital Literacy Workshops Math Up for MAT0028 Chem UpWord UpLook Up Spring 2015 Math Up Daytona/Deland Chem UpWord UpTech UpLook Up

What Makes Gear Up Great FREE program using existing resources Flexible Schedules (daytime and evening) Faculty collaboration is essential Study Skills are covered along with concept review Students collaborate and participate Stress free and engaging Boost confidence/give students an opportunity for success before class begins Introduce them to resources (Learning Commons) Build relationships: peers, Learning Commons, faculty Make it a rewarding experience for students Use as a model for other challenging courses

Results and Outcomes

Results and Outcomes (using Math Up 1033 data) Students more successful – pass rate in MAT1033 was on average 20% higher Students more engaged – students who attended were two times more likely to visit the ASC Students more confident – students attempted and correctly answered more questions in pre and post check evaluations

Results and Outcomes Student Feedback “Lots of valuable resources are available, but it takes a while to find them. This class speeds up the process.” “Really helped with test anxiety.” “I like how we went over what to expect, tips for tests, etc.” “I am no longer looking at MAT1033 with total dread!” “I am so excited to begin now.”
