INSTRUCTIONS Write “Quickwrites” at the top of the page. On a sheet of loose leaf draw a line halfway down by the hole, splitting your page in two. You have 5 minutes to write ½ a page. You are to choose one quickwrite to respond to related to the chapters covered in class. Restate the question in your answer! I’ll collect them when we’ve filled up a single sheet with 4 Quickwrites. Full credit will be earned for ½ a page of serious thoughts on the subject.

LITTLE WHITE LIE CHAPTER 1 After Ellen and Annemarie are stopped by the German soldiers, they decide they will not tell their parents so that their parents will not worry. Would you tell your parents about the situation with the soldiers? Why? Why not? Do you think that this is a serious lie?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

BEDTIME STORIES CHAPTER 2 Kirsti loves when her sister Annemarie tells her bedtime stories. Do you remember a time in your childhood when someone told you bedtime stories? Did you have a favorite? If so, what was it about? If not, why not? Do you wish someone had read more bedtime stories to you?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

KING CHAPTER 2 Denmark has a king and Annemarie's parents say they would die for him. Do you think you would sacrifice your life if your king's life was in danger? Why? Or why not? And would it be different if your king was a president, instead?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

RESISTANCE CHAPTER 2 In Denmark, there are people who are fighting back against the Nazis, only they do it strategically in secret. Do you think you would have been one of the secret fighters? Or would you have been too scared the Nazis would hurt you or your family? Explain your reasons.

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

JUST JEWS CHAPTER 3 The Germans start ordering the Jews to close up their shops. Nobody else. Just the Jews. Can you think of any other group of people who are treated poorly just because of who they are? What do you think about how they are treated? What do you think about those who treat them poorly?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

STAND CHAPTER 3 If you found out that a group of people was being treated poorly just because of who they are, would you risk your life to protect them? On a scale of 1 to 100, 1=super easy and 100=hardest thing ever... how hard would it be for you to stand on their side? Why?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

ON THE LIST CHAPTER 4 The Germans went into the Jewish synagogues and took the lists of Jews and their home addresses. How would you feel if your friend's name was on the list? What emotions would be rushing through you? What about if the list had your family's names?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

DAUGHTER CHAPTER 4 When Ellen comes to Annemarie's house to stay, Annemarie's dad says that he has 3 daughters again? What do you think it felt like for him to pretend he had a new daughter now after he had lost his oldest years ago?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

FAMILY CHAPTER 5 When Ellen and Annemarie are talking, Ellen says that she would rather be separated from her family than be dead? What do you think about that choice? Would you rather be separated from your family or dead? Why?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

TAKING CHARGE CHAPTER 5 When the Nazi soldiers wake up their family at 4 a.m., Annemarie's dad takes charge of the situation. What things does he do that give a glimpse at the kind of person he is on the inside? What kinds of emotions, decisions, and personality does he have?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

NAZI SOLDIERS CHAPTER 6 Traveling on the train with their Jewish friend Ellen to visit their uncle, the girls are confronted by some Nazi soldiers. If you were in their shoes, what feelings would be going through you? What would you say? What would you do? And what would you say or do when your little sister started to talk?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

THE OCEAN CHAPTER 7 Ellen says she has never seen the ocean before. Have you seen the ocean? Which ocean was it? What was it like to see the ocean for the first time? Do you remember your first time? If not, describe a clear memory you have of the ocean? Describe the air and the water and the horizon and the people. If you have never seen the ocean, what does that feel like? Have you wanted to? Why or why not?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

R.I.P. AUNTIE CHAPTER 8 Uncle Henrik says Aunt Birte has died, and her casket needs to rest in the house. But Annemarie is suspicious. Who do you think Aunt Birte might be? Give a couple of ideas, then explain why you think each one. Why do you think Henrik is calling "it" Aunt Birte?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

HOW BRAVE CHAPTER 9 Uncle Henrik asks Annemarie how brave she is. Now we ask you the same question: How brave are you? What about in the face of Nazi soldiers? Explain . . . give proof.

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

LIES OR TRUTH? CHAPTER 9 Uncle Henrik says that he lied to Annemarie to keep her safe. Do you think it is OK for adults to do this, to lie to us in order to keep us safe? What if they are wrong and their lies will not keep us safe? But what if we aren’t old enough or ready to hear the truth?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

NUMBER THE STARS CHAPTER 10 When Peter reaches for the Bible and reads from the psalm, how do you think the meaning of the song would have affected the people at the house? And how does it take on new meaning knowing that the title of this novel is in the psalm that Peter reads? What kind of stars could it be that God is numbering?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

CHILDREN CHAPTER 11 Before Peter leaves to go help the Jews travel to Sweden, he calls Annemarie “long legs.” Then Annemarie says that it doesn't feel like they are children anymore. What do you think has changed to make Annemarie not feel like a child anymore? Her age? The war? Her relationship with Peter?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

WAITING CHAPTER 12 When Annemarie is waiting in Uncle Henrik house for mother to return from smuggling the Jews to Sweden, she thinks that it is harder for the people who are waiting. Think about a time when you had to wait . . . like really wait. A time where it made all of your emotions in a jumble. Describe the time and your emotions.

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

WORRIES CHAPTER 13 When Annemarie's mother was crawling back to the house, she said all she could think about was worrying for Annemarie and Kirsti. Think about your parents. When do you think they worry about you? What worries do they have for you? Or if you don't think they worry about you, why not? How does thinking about their worries for you change how you feel about them?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

RESPONSIBILITY CHAPTER 13 Annemarie is given a very great responsibility to carry this secret package to her Uncle Henrik. Can you remember a time when you were given a great responsibility? Or maybe your older brother or sister was given the great responsibility? What made it so great? And how did you feel about being the one who had to do it?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

RED RIDING HOOD CHAPTER 14 While Annemarie is traveling to deliver the package, why do you think she gets absorbed in the memory of the story of “Little Red Riding Hood”? What are her emotions while traveling? And how does this story of “Little Red Riding Hood” connect with her emotions and situation?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

LIES LIES LIES CHAPTER 15 Is it wrong to lie? What if it is just a small lie? A big one? What if the lie is to a group of German soldiers like when Annemarie told her lie? What makes one lie more wrong than another lie?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

SCARED CHAPTER 15 What is the most scared you ever been? What were you doing? Why were you scared? Do you think you could have just changed your mind about your fear – the way Annemarie did – and acted a different way besides scared? Why or why not?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

HANDLE IT CHAPTER 17 How do you feel about Annemarie's parents lying to her about her sister Lise’s death? Was she too young to know the truth? Do you think your parents should tell you stuff that is so serious? Why do you think you are ready to handle it? Don’t parents know better about what you’re ready to handle?

NUMBER THE ST RS QUICKWRITES

HUMAN DECENCY Write your thoughts about this soldier’s words: AFTERWARD Write your thoughts about this soldier’s words: “. . . and I want you all to remember – that you must not dream yourselves back to the times before the war, but the dream for you all, young and old, must be to create an ideal of human decency, and not a narrow-minded and prejudiced one. That is the great gift our country hungers for, something every little peasant boy can look forward to, and with pleasure feel he is a part of – something he can work and fight for.”
