“Lets just give the students a multiple choice test and call it good.” The Importance of Authentic Assessment Kelly Phillip

What is Standardized Testing Examples of these tests are the ACT, SAT and the GRE Most often they are multiple choice

Drawbacks of Standardized testing English language learners may never have been exposed to this form of testing before and the language can be difficult for all students in general not just ELLs

Standardized testing It will not show what the student can do and may be quickly forgotten afterwards Students lose interest and motivation Cannot tell where a student has a problem

Why Authentic Assessment Authentic assessments address real life settings Assess higher order thinking skills Matches what the students are doing in the classroom

Another added value Authentic assessments incorporate ELLs. It makes learning more accessible to all students. Assess an ELLs’ knowledge and not their English skills

Common misconception: “Lets just give the students a multiple choice test and call it good.”

What are a few types of Assessment? Think about the activities you do every day. Based on these every day real life activities teachers can come up with creative and meaningful ways to assess the students learning progress Authentic assessment incorporates reading writing, listening and speaking; standardized testing just incorporates reading and writing

Writing Here is an example of an authentic writing situation

Reading

Listening Lunch menu

Speaking Story retelling Oral interviews

In conclusion Authentic assessment is a clearer picture of what the students know and can do Prepares the students for situations they will have to face in real life Motivates the student to learn Incorporates English language learners
