Presentation transcript:

 A group of people living in a particular local area  A group of people having ethnic, cultural or religious characteristics in common  A group of nations having common interests  Profession: the body of people in an occupation, e.g. Medical community  Group where there are agreement as to goals

 Community is a set of people with some shared element.  The substance of the shared element varies widely, from a situation to interests to lives and values. The term is widely used to evoke a sense of collectivity.

 Activities that increase the positive outcomes possible within a community by linking individuals and organisations working toward common ends

 The long term process whereby people who are marginalised or living in poverty work together to identify needs, create change, exert more influence in the decisions which affect their lives and work to improve the quality of their lives, the communities in which they live, and the society of which they are a part.

 CD entails a variety of activities done within or on behalf of a community to add to or enhance it in some way. It may include housing construction, developing co- operatives or rehabilitation of structures.

 Technical version: a process involving the conception, planning and implementation of projects or activities which create improvements in (or reduce the extent of declines in) the living standards of people in a particular community.

 Community development is an educational and social process which has been closely associated with adult education.  Community development is a process by which members of the community determine to take stock of their community, set goals for desirable change, and work towards those goals.

Welfare is different to community development. Welfare may be thought of as:  Aid in the form of money or necessities that are distributed to those in need by an agency or program  An immediate intervention to provide necessary help to those in need

 Empowerment-an individual assuming more control over their lives in the context of their own environment  Community development focuses on lack of power and inequality as a major factor of the problems faced by many in society  Community development takes approaches that produce social change and collective actions as ways to address those issues

 Community capacity is concerned with identifying the capacities of abilities of communities, to enable them to support their own needs and aspirations

 Community capacity is concerned with the characteristics of communities that affect their ability to identify and address social and public health issues  It is mainly concerned with individuals and groups within the community acquiring:  Transferable knowledge  Transferable skills  Systems and Resources that will positively affect the community

 Capacity building operates at the individual, group, organisational, community and policy levels. It is both a process and an outcome.

Community-based (Community Development) prevention strategies and programs are unlikely to succeed if the community or group does not have the capacity to support them. Where community capacity is lacking, it may be necessary to build the community’s capacity before trying to implement such programs

The empowerment philosophy focuses on people becoming better able to take responsibility for themselves People can be empowered by learning about and understanding factors that prevent them from taking responsibility for their own problems

 Give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. (Welfare approach)  Give a man a fishing rod and teach him how to fish and he will eat every day (C.D.approach)  Enlighten him further and he will manage his own seafood restaurant (Capacity building)

 Imagine that you are a health care worker that visits elderly clients at their home. It comes to your attention that your client has been the victim of abuse by someone close to him.  What immediate intervention do you take to protect your client?

 After you have been working in the role for quite some time you have come across many victims of abuse and have taken immediate intervening actions each time.  What Community Development approaches can you think of that may help to prevent incidents of abuse in the future?
