SBU: 3 End products: a. video-recording of a debate b. three word webs Needed: internet, video recorder or a teacher for a final assessment

Je hebt deze opdracht naar behoren uitgevoerd als je je mening over een ethisch vraagstuk naar voren kunt brengen, en je je standpunt ook overeind kunt houden in de discussie.

Situation You and some friends saw a shocking picture in the paper. You organize a debate about how far press photographers should go. 9/11

Assignment for 8-12 students teamwork roleplay Tip: first click here to read a text on press ethicshere

1Together with a partner(s) draw up a list of expressions on one of the following themes – “freedom of the press”, “an argument”, “a debate”. Make sure all topics are covered by some of the group. 2Now make a word web on your theme The following link may be useful: This is an English – English dictionary. Build a Word Web of 15 words around each theme. What collocations* can you find? *collocation = fixed combinations (e.g. you always talk of a ‘free press’, in democratic countries, or of ‘the gutter press’ in connection with sensation seeking papers etc.) press / argument / debate

You are going to take part in a debate. Debates, in a way, are like a game. Click here for more instructionshere on how to conduct one. Remember: in a debate you stick to your role throughout!

As your debate will be (partially) play-acted divide roles: A) one representative of the press / a photographer B) one newspaper tycoon C) a mother of young children D) a chairperson E) someone with a legal background – in favour of protecting a person’s privacy F) someone with strong religious convictions G) an adjudicator (!) H) …………………think up more roles, if needed. Make a list of all possible aspects: consult the article ‘Photojournalism, an ethical approach’ Now collect ‘proof’ or ‘evidence’ to support the point of view you are going to defend in the debate. For this purpose you will have to search the net for relevant (photo?) material.

-Finally: you may find it useful to organize an extra cameraman/woman who will video tape your group’s debate. -A digital video camera can be booked in -the ‘Studiehuis’ (Coenraad Rietman). Click here to go back to the beginning
