LEISURE GCSE PE

L ESSON OBJECTIVES Know what is meant by leisure time. Undretsand the choices individuals have about how they make use of their leisure time. Know the benefits to be gained by becoming involved in active leisure.

K EY TERMS Low impact: Not strenuous with little or no pressure on the joints. Private enterprise : A privately owned business not regulated in the same way as a state owned organisation. Rural areas : An area outside cities and towns. Urban areas: A geographical area consisting of a town or city.

A CTIVE LEISURE This includes taking part in activities that involve exertion of physical or mental energy and can often include low impact physical activities such as yoga or walking.

PASSIVE LEISURE Activities such as those in which a person does not exert any significant physical or mental energy, things such as going to the cinema, watching television or playing video games. This aspect of leisure time is the one that causes the most concern amongst experts as its thought that many activities do not provide the benefits that active leisure activities do.

H ISTORY OF LEISURE AND LEISURE PROVISION The word “leisure" derives from the Latin licere meaning to be permitted or to be free. Local authorities have a legal responsibility to provide leisure services which include libraries, swimming pools and sports centres.
