Using a Graduated Cylinder Uses: 1.To measure the volume of liquids very accurately 2. To find the volume of solid objects that do not have regular dimensions.
Important Information! When liquids are poured into a graduated cylinder they will not form a straight line. They will instead form a curved line that.

NOTES #1 : Understanding Volume

Set up your page for Cornell notes Notes #1- UNDERSTANDING VOLUME Draw a line Down the left Side of the page

Set up your page for Cornell notes Notes #1- UNDERSTANDING VOLUME The LEFT side is where you write A QUESTION OR PROMPT

Set up your page for Cornell notes Notes #1- UNDERSTANDING VOLUME The RIGHT side is where you right YOUR ANSWER

1. What is Volume? Volume is: WRITE WHAT YOU THINK “VOLUME” MEANS

1. What is Volume? Volume is: The amount of space taken up by a solid, liquid or gas

NOTES #1— UNDERSTANDING VOLUME 1. What Is volume ? The amt. of space taken up by solid, liquid, or gas ON the right hand side: Write the answer to the Question or prompt. Be sure to use symbol and and Abbreviation to save time And space

2. How do you measure the volume of a liquid?  A GRADUATED CYLINDER IS USED TO MEASURE LIQUID VOLUME

NOTES #1— UNDERSTANDING VOLUME What Is volume ? 2. How do you measure volume of a liquid? The amt. of space taken up by solid, liquid, or gas Using a graduated cylinder

3. What units are used for a graduated cylinder?  Graduated cylinders measure liquids using the metric unit of milliliters (mL).  1 milliliter is a very Tiny amount of liquid. It is just a few drops!

 All graduated cylinders are marked with lines or “graduates.”  The lines help you measure how much liquid is in the cylinder 4. How do we use or read a graduated cylinder?

Step 1: In order to read a graduated cylinder, it is important to determine the VALUE of each line A B C

In your notes, Sketch and label the graduated cylinder at your table Now, add 22 ml of liquid in your drawing. 22 mL 10 ml

Sometimes, when liquid is added to the cylinder, it “sticks” to the sides of the glass creating the appearance of a slight “U” shape curve at the top. WHAT IS THIS CURVE CALLED? MENISCUS Draw and label the meniscus

Step 2: To determine the MOST ACCURATE measurement, always read the number at the bottom of the curve. Step 3: To avoid errors, ALWAYS read the numbers from eye level! 4. How do we use or read a graduated cylinder?

WHAT IS THE VOLUME OF THE LIQUID IN THIS GRADUATED CYLINDER? 38 THINK…WHAT DO YOU DO FIRST? 1. DETERMINE THE VALUE OF THE LINES 2.MEASURE THE BOTTOM OF THE CURVE (MENISCUS) 3.Read at eye level 4.Remember to include the units!!! 37

AB CD COPY THEN ANSWER FOR LETTER D, MARK THE LINE AT 11.6 mL

TIME TO PRACTICE Glue the booklet into your notebook and label it CW #4 Finding Volume of a Liquid Be sure to add it to your Table of Contents
