By the time she was 12, she was determined to "do something worthwhile At the age of 16, she was sure that God was calling her to serve others. She used every spare minute to learn from nursing books she had secretly obtained. On May 12 last she celebrated her ninetieth birthday, and was the recipient of a congratulatory message from King George.

adulthood In 1846 she visited Kaiserwerth, a pioneering hospital established and managed by an order of Catholic sisters in Germany Florence Nightingale's career in nursing began in earnest in 1851 when she received four months' training in Germany as a deaconess of Kaiserwerth. Nightingale died in South Street, Park Lane, London, on 13 August 1910 at the age of ninety and was buried on 20 August in the family plot at East Wellow, Hampshire. An offer of burial in Westminster Abbey was refused by her relatives. Memorial services took place in St. Paul's Cathedral and Liverpool Cathedral, among many other places.

Accomplishments pioneering of nursing and the reform of hospitals She became a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society in 1858 Florence Nightingale is mostly known for her radical innovations in nursing care. She received was the Order of Merit in 1907 and in 1908 she was awarded the Freedom of the City of London. She had already received the German order of the Cross of Merit and the French gold medal of Secours aux Blesses Militaries. On 10 May 1910 she was presented with the badge of honor of the Norwegian Red Cross Society.

Only after long emotional battles was Florence permitted to have tutors in mathematics. She learned arithmetic, geometry, algebra, and before her involvement with nursing, spent her time tutoring children in these subjects. On August 12, 1853, Nightingale took a post of superintendent at the Institute for the Care of Sick Gentlewomen in Upper Harley Street, London, a position she held until October Her father had given her an annual income of £500 (roughly $50,000 in present terms) that allowed her to live comfortably and to pursue her career Nightingale embarked for the Crimea on 21 October with thirty-eight nurses By 1860, £50,000 had been collected and the Nightingale School and Home for Nurses was established at St. Thomas's Hospital.
