1. Florence Nightingale  Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 in Italy so they named her after a city - Florence.  Her parents didn’t think she should work in a dirty hospital.  However she persevered and went to Germany to train to be a nurse.  Then she went to Scutari and helped in the hospitals there.  Most soldiers died from the germs of the hospital not the wounds of weapons.

2. Lady Of The Lamp  She wasn’t allowed to touch male soldiers as they thought it was rude.  She was known as the lady of the lamp because she went around the beds every night with a lamp to check if the soldiers were ok.

3.  She died in 1910 at 90 years of age.
