Florence Nightingale Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 in Italy so they named her after a city - Florence. Her parents didn’t think she should work in a dirty hospital. However she persevered and went to Germany to train to be a nurse. Then she went to Scutari and helped in the hospitals there. Most soldiers died from the germs of the hospital not the wounds of weapons.

Lady Of The Lamp She wasn’t allowed to touch male soldiers as they thought it was rude. She was known as the lady of the lamp because she went around the beds every night with a lamp to check if the soldiers were ok.

She died in 1910 at 90 years of age.
