YOUR FIRST SEMI ANNUAL REPORT IS OUT, NOW WHAT? MARCH 2012

OUTLINE *WHO GETS WHAT? *ANALYZING YOUR SAR *PRESENTING YOUR SAR *TIPS AND TRICKS

WHO GETS WHAT? The reports get released to the SCR workstation Surgeon Champion or Administrative Lead does not receive a report unless you send it * ALL the reports released by NSQIP to your team – especially your surgeon champion

Save as zip file Save on flash drive Attach in several s

ANALYZING YOUR Semi Annual Report *Take your time *Review and understand your SAR *Meet with your surgeon champion and discuss the SAR *Make sure that you have the same understanding about the reports and it may take more than 1 meeting *Questions: Mark Cohen – ACS statistician Jonathan Berkowitz – UBC statistician Angela Tecson – Data manager SQAN Peter Doris – NSQIP Surgeon Lead

LIMITED DATA Valid – small n pools the sites toward the middle If your data is in the middle deciles – you either have small number of cases or you are doing as expected. “Needs Improvement”- take advantage of this notation! Usually upper decile. If your observe rate between your first and second SAR stays the same, additional cases (next SAR) will reduce the margin of error. The result will become precise. If your data is in the decile 8,9,10 – you are in the worst 70%

How to use your SAR to find QI targets Even with limited data, if you are on the extreme, that is a good place to start!

PRESENTING YOUR FIRST SAR *Surgeon Champion and SCR make decision on what to emphasize on the report *Make sure your surgeon champion is presenting the SAR with you present (to clarify questions) *Edit your ppt Do not present any information you don’t understand *Keep it simple!

TIPS AND TRICKS *Know your audience *Disclose ALL data gaps *Build a solid grasp of the SAR -be able to answer the why’s and what’s *First impressions last

You can observe a lot just by watching - Yogi Berra

Good luck sharing your fist Semi Annual Report with Surgery Colleagues, Leadership and front line teams. Questions:
