The 4th Annual AWEsome Washington, D.C. Field Trip Our Nation’s Capital AWE 5 th Grade April 1-2, 2011

Friday, April 1, 2011 Itinerary 5:00 AM Arrive at AWE 5:30 Depart AWE 8:30-8:45 First stop Virginia State Line Welcome Center—restroom break 9:00 Breakfast will be distributed on buses. 12:00-12:30 Arrive at Jefferson Memorial. We will tour this memorial as a group. 12:30 - 5:30 Drop off at National Archives. Lunch will be on your own during this time. You may bring a bag lunch from home or choose to have a bagged lunch from the AWE Cafeteria. Leave luggage on the buses. This time is free time to explore Washington, D.C. Please stay with your designated groups. 5:30 Meet at the front side (the Mall side, Madison Drive) of the National Museum of Natural History to board the buses. They will take us to the hotel. 6:00-6:45 Check in with a 5 th Grade teacher at the Holiday Inn. Only chaperones will be allowed possession of the room keys. Prepare for dinner at Red, Hot and Blue 6:45Board Buses for dinner. 7:00-8:30Dinner at Red, Hot and Blue 8:30-10:00 Free time to relax, shower, visit at the hotel. Chaperones will make sure all students call home and check in with parents during this time. NO EXCEPTIONS! Do not use the phones in the hotel!!! All students must be chaperoned AT ALL TIMES!! NO EXCEPTIONS (This includes hallway travel to other rooms, being left in the room or anywhere in the hotel)! 10:00 LIGHTS OUT!!!

Saturday, April 2, 2011 Itinerary 7:00-8:00 AM RISE AND SHINE! Breakfast at the hotel. Chaperones check out/turn in keys to a 5 th Grade teacher in the lobby/load luggage on buses. Make sure you are with your designated group. 8:15 Depart hotel for Lincoln Memorial drop off. Most of the museums do not open until 10 am. Early morning is a good time to visit the memorials. FREE TIME. 1:15 PM Meet the buses at the south side of the Washington Monument. (Look for the buses) 1:30 Depart for Arlington National Cemetery. Please be on time! 2:00 Arrive at Arlington National Cemetery. 3:00 Meet at “Tomb of Unknown Soldier” to witness Changing of the Guard. Head back together to visitors’ center to load buses and depart Arlington National Cemetery. 3:45 Depart for home. 5:30-6:30 Dinner on you own w/ your group. We will be stopping at an exit with many fast food restaurants. You will be able to choose with your group where you would like to eat. You will be responsible for purchasing this meal. Use restrooms before departure!! 9:00-9:15We will be stopping at rest stop near Rocky Mount for QUICK restroom break. 10:30-11:00 Arrive at AWE for PICKUP! ***Approximately one hour away from AWE arrival, students will phone their parents to inform them of AWE arrival time. Parents must be waiting at AWE PROMPTLY when buses arrive.

What should I pack? Pack clothing for Saturday and sleepwear for Friday night. Pack any accessories/toiletries needed.Pack one bag with clothes and other accessories to put under the bus and one carry-on for the bus with your snacks. The school will not be held responsible for any lost or damaged items. Eating is allowed on the bus so you may bring snacks Please send money with your child to buy merchandise and souvenirs. They will have an opportunity to shop in various gift shops. Each person will be responsible for purchasing Friday’s lunch and Saturday’s lunch and dinner.. Wear comfortable walking shoes with socks. Chaperone Responsibilities Keep a list of the children in your group. (Chaperone Folder) Keep children in your presence at all times! Supervise any incidental side trips (first aid, restroom breaks, etc.). Do not permit students in the hallways unsupervised while at the hotel. Please have your students change clothing in a private space in your hotel room. Do not change in front of each other. Please insist that your charges act in an safe and appropriate manner at all times. Remember that we should be quiet and respectful while visiting memorials and the museums. DO NOT RUN!!! Swimming will NOT be allowed. (This is a Craven County Schools policy) First aid needs should be directed to AWE staff members. Any questions or concerns regarding discipline issues should be directed to AWE staff. Please DO NOT depart from the itinerary.

Reminders Dress in layers Appropriate Behavior Please do not make any phone calls from telephones in the hotel rooms. Do not allow children to use any of the food amenities in the rooms. They are not included in the price of our rooms. Any extra charges while at the hotel will be paid for by the room attendants, not AWE. Have your students call home Friday night before retiring and at some point on Saturday to check in at home with his or her parents. Pick up child at approximately 10:30-11:00 p.m. Under no circumstances will students be allowed to walk, ride a bike or a scooter home. They must be accompanied by a parent or pre-arranged guardian.

Arlington National Cemetery Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Arlington House Robert E. Lee Memorial Gravesites of JFK and RFK Iwo Jima Memorial **This is an active cemetery. There may be funerals occurring while we are there. It is very important that we show respect by behaving properly while we are there. Do not take electronics to these sites.

Have fun!!! Please remember this trip is for the kids!!! Please see as much as you can. You will not be able to visit everywhere so decide as a group on our way up Friday morning which places you would most like to see.
