“B E THE P OWER OF O NE ” B UILDING C HARACTER FOR S UCCESS “Sometimes I Feel Angry” Lesson K.12 Created By: Pam Gunter

P REPARATION Materials Needed: Use the circles from the last lesson. Make a smiley face on the green circles, and a frowning face on the red circles. Classroom Setup: The students may sit at their desks or on the floor at the beginning of the lesson. During the lesson you will need some open floor space.

C HALLENGE OF THE W EEK – F OLLOW U P Who wants to share a good choice they made last week? How did making a right choice make you feel?

T HE A CTIVITY Start the lesson by explaining that there are times when we do things, or other people do things to us that make us have feelings of anger. Name some things that would maybe make us feel upset and angry. Pushing, stealing, teasing, etc. Feeling angry is a normal emotion like being happy, sad, and excited. Sometimes when we feel angry we make poor choices and we can hurt ourselves and others. Today we are going to learn about ways we can feel better when we start feeling angry.

T HE A CTIVITY - C ONTINUED Spread the circles all over the floor without overlapping them. If you would like, you could play quiet music as you begin the activity. Explain to the children that you are going to share some examples of students getting angry. If they make a right choice to help control their anger, they need to stand on a green smiley face. If they make a wrong choice and it will just make them more upset and angry, have them stand on a red frowning face.

T HE A CTIVITY - C ONTINUED Johnny was upset with Suzie for taking his pencil. He shoved Suzie and called her a bad name. (red) What could Johnny have done differently? Have the students move to a green smiley face after you discuss better options, such as asking Suzie to “please” return his pencil. Rebecca was playing outside on the playground when someone pushed her onto the ground. Rebecca told an adult what happened so it wouldn’t happen again. (green) Travis and Troy were playing marbles together. Troy really liked one of Travis’ marbles and decided to keep it. Troy hit Travis and grabbed it out of his pocket. (red) What could Troy have done instead of hitting Travis and grabbing the marble? He could have explained to Troy that he didn’t like him taking his things. If Troy didn’t give it back, he could have told his teacher. Have the children move to a green smiley face. The teacher asked all of the students to pick up the papers and get ready for recess. Jan wasn’t finished and refused to pick up. She yelled at the teacher. (red) What could Jan have done differently? Have the students move to a green smiley face after you discuss better options, such as, Jan could have gone to the teacher and explained she wasn’t quite done yet and asked if she could have one more minute.

T HE O BJECT OF THE L ESSON Points instructor needs to bring out: Explain to the students that sometimes we feel angry but there are things we can do to help when we feel angry or upset. We can talk to the person that has made us feel upset. We can leave the area and play another game or activity. We can sit and relax for a while. Do some stretching exercises. Relaxation helps us relief stress and anger. Think of a place that makes you happy inside. Think of a fun family vacation you had. When needed, visit with an adult such as a parent, teacher or school counselor.

C HALLENGE OF THE W EEK Challenge all of the students to work on managing their anger properly. Encourage them to think of a song, or a fun vacation they can use when they are angry. Also have them practice breathing deeply, stretching and possibly walking around the room to relax.
