Summary – March of the Penguins  For thousands of years, Emperor penguins have participated in an incredible journey across the ice deserts of the Antarctic. They march single file from the ocean to partake in an intricate mating ritual. Once mates have paired, the female lays a single egg and then returns to the ocean to find the food she has gone months without. The male penguin stays behind in the harshest of conditions protecting the egg until it is ready to hatch. The mother penguin must return immediately after the baby penguin emerges; she will provide the nourishment the baby needs to survive. It is now the father penguins turn to return to the ocean to find food.

Life Science Concept #1 - Environment Cold desert/tundra  Winter temperature average – 58 ° C  Wind speed averages 44 mph  Coldest place on Earth  Penguins only Survive because of Their fat, blubber Covered bodies and Waterproof feathers.

Life Science Concept #2 – Reproduction  The penguins mate (sexual reproduction) and the female lays the egg.  The male protects and incubates the egg keeping it warm and protected under a piece of skin.  The male keeps the egg safe for 2 – 3 months until it ready to hatch.

Life Science Concept #3 – Basic Needs  Food/energy – Emperor Penguins eat krill, shrimp and squid.  Water – ice (melts for moisture)  Air/gases – Emperor Penguins breathe oxygen through their lungs. They can hold their breath for up to 20 minutes.  Shelter – Tundra Ice/cold waters (protected by blubber and feathers).

Conclusion – Why is this movie important? We can all learn from this incredible story of survival and struggle. The Emperor Penguins have an unbelievable resilience and exist mainly to keep the species alive. The adaptations of the Emperor Penguins are amazing examples of how animals can change over long periods of time to survive in even the harshest climate on Earth. This story should be seem by all animal lovers. It is inspiring and highly entertaining.
