Speech & Play Production Rules Meeting

The entries to the district contests are to be submitted no later than a fixed date to be determined annually by the NSAA and indicated on the NSAA calendar. Play Production – Friday, November 18 Speech – Friday, March 2 School District Director

Selection of Judges for District and State Contests  Any judge interested in working district or state contests shall apply to the NSAA by submitting a completed online NSAA application from for each activity.  NSAA judge’s ballot results submitted by coaches and activities administrators on the online form will be part of the selection criteria.  Consideration will be given to experience and geographical location of judges.  Consideration for state will be given to judge’s availability to judge district contests, ballot results, experience and geographical location.

Judging Reminders Remind everyone to turn off all electronic devices. Remind everyone to be polite listeners and audience members. Give the presentation your undivided attention. Do not approach speakers.

Judging Responsibility * Return your ballots to the tab room in a timely manner. *Avoid commenting on student performances on social medial outlets and to the general public. *Be flexible in accepting the student’s interpretation of a piece of literature or treatment of a topic.

Coaching Reminders You represent your school. Do not ask a judge to change their decisions. Make sure you are familiar with the rules. You are responsible for your students.

Documentation Material that provides information or evidence or that serves as a record. Information you have borrowed from a source, such as quotations, summaries, and paraphrases, must be clearly documented.

Manuscript Typically a printed page. ‘Printed’ shall be interpreted to mean either the printed manuscript or a typewritten copy. Cannot be an electronic device.

Duet Acting A performance can be disqualified for using more than 2 chairs and a table. A teacher’s desk does not meet the definition of a table. If needed, it is the speakers responsibility to provide a table and 2 chairs.

Oral Interpretation of Prose Original Cutting Pre-cut interpretation pieces offered through on-line services would violate the “commercial cuttings” rule and would be grounds for disqualification.

Oral Interpretation of Drama No costumes or props, with the exception of the intact paper manuscript, shall be permitted. Presenters are to suggest the meaning, the feeling, and the mood of the play through interpretation.

Entertainment Speaking Visual/audio media may be employed Props are not considered costuming. Props are items that are carried on.

Oral Interpretation of Poetry Shall be presented from manuscript. With or without a lectern Possession of a script.
