Outline Mission of JCNDE Changes Occurring in 2012 Ramifications of Changes Possible Solutions / Actions in Progress Questions

Mission of the JCNDE "The JCNDE develops and conducts highly reliable, state of the art cognitive examinations that assist regulatory agencies in making valid decisions regarding licensure of oral health care professionals, develops and implements policy for the orderly, secure, and fair administration of its examinations, and is a leader and resource in assessment for the oral health care profession." 4http://

Changes Occurring in 2012 Candidates will receive PASS / FAIL for NBDE Part 1 and Part 2 1 Those candidates that test before will retain their scores. After 01/01/12, passing candidates will receive the status of Pass, “P”, while failing candidates will receive raw score information for each discipline with the status of Fail, “F”

Changes Occurring in 2012 Shorter Application Eligibility Period 1 Once application and fee has been submitted for examination, student will have 6 months to schedule a testing appointment.

Changes Occurring in 2012 Limit on Examination Eligibility 1 Students are limited to successful completion of an exam within 5 years of testing or 5 exam attempts, whichever comes first. This applies to exam attempts 01/01/2012 or later.

Changes Occurring in 2012 Communication Information about Exam Irregularities MAY Accompany Score Reports 1  If an irregularity is ruled by the JCNDE, it is the chair’s decision to include a summary of the irregularity in the student’s score report.

Changes Occurring in 2012 Complete Score History 1 Currently four most recent tests are listed Starting in 2012: Complete history of scores will be reported to state board or any other entity requesting scores.

Changes Occurring in 2012 Time Limits for Retesting as a Result of an Appeal 1 JCNDE allows appeal for a retest within 30 days Upon processing the application, the candidate will remain eligible to test for 90 days following the grant of an appeal.

New Item Types 1 Multiple Correct Answers, Extended Matching, and Ordering are coming to the NBDE These new item types will be scored objectively with a well defined scoring rubric. Responses must match scoring rubric exactly in order to get a score of “1” for the item. If there is no exact match, the score for the item is “0.” There is no partial credit.

Progress in Advanced Dental Education Application Processes As a result of Pass/Fail Changes ADEA initiated the Future of Advanced Dental Education Admissions Project to offer guides and tools for navigating the admission environment. Goal of ADEA/FADEA 2 Identify the best ways to review, compare, and select candidates for advanced dental education programs.

Progress in Advanced Dental Education Application Processes In 2010, ADEA Conducted Survey of 714 Postdoctoral Program Directors (54% responded) 2 Result, top five traits successful candidates have that majority of program directors agree. Characteristics frame admissions and ETS PPI for 2012 cycle.
